History of Yasnaya Polyana

In historical documents, the first mention of the estate, located 14 km from the modern borders of the city of Tula, dates back to 1652. In the middle of the eighteenth century the estate became the property of the Volkonsky family - the ancestors of the famous writer on the maternal line. Several generations of the bearers of the prince's family worked diligently to improve the estate. It was during the Volkonskys on the territory of Yasnaya Polyana that gardens were destroyed, ponds were excavated, many architectural buildings were erected.

In 1828, Leo Nikolayevich Tolstoy was born in the family estate. Local nature and measured provincial life from an early age inspired the future writer. The estate of Tolstyh Yasnaya Polyana is the place where Lev Nikolayevich lived about 50 years of his life. His love for the estate, he never concealed and often mentioned his native place in his works.

Life of L.N. Tolstoy in a family estate

The oldest building in the modern Yasnaya Polyana is the house of Volkonsky. At the time of Leo Nikolayevich this building (formerly the main manor house) was used for economic purposes. The Tolstoy family also rebuilt one of the outbuildings for their own living. The writer's house is comparatively small in area, but at the same time incredibly cozy. Inside, it has a simple finish, and the main value in it is the extensive library of Lev Nikolaevich.

During his lifetime, Tolstoy became famous not only for his intellect and talent, but also for his incredible philanthropy. At the estate was opened a school for peasant children. Yasnaya Polyana during the Great Patriotic War

After the death of Leo Tolstoy, Tolstoy's estate was not ransacked, since peasants from the surrounding villages respected the writer and his family. In 1921 a museum was opened in Yasnaya Polyana. To a large extent this is due to the daughter of Lev Nikolaevich Alexandra Lvovna, who became the first director of the memorial and cultural center. Despite the state status, the descendants of the great writer always dealt directly with the museum.

At the very beginning of the Great Patriotic War, a large part of the exhibits was evacuated to Tomsk. The old manor was occupied by enemy troops for 45 days. The fascists inflicted considerable damage to the museum, stole and spoiled many ancient objects. Restorative work was begun immediately after liberation. What is remarkable, the museum-estate of Tolstoy was opened before the war, already in 1942.
