Mnemosyna - the great goddess of the memory of Ancient Greece

Scientists, historians, philosophers have always sought to preserve and study the memory of past times. In order to make new discoveries, one must know the nature of things and phenomena. Cognition always precedes knowledge. The human mind is a universal intelligence, it is capable of mastering and understanding everything. But in order to make discoveries, you need to have a base. The larger it is, the more opportunities for improvement.

Gods in the life of Hellenes

The ancient Greeks knew this. No wonder the Hellenic culture gave mankind such a large number of remarkable monuments of literature and art. From antiquity, we got not only deep spiritual knowledge from the field of natural and human sciences, imprinted in literature, but also a real representation of the highest civilization of that time. Since the sixteenth century BC, the Greeks professed polytheism, that is polytheism. They built temples, installed altars, where they sacrificed in the form of the best animals, selected fruits, as well as milk, cheese, wine, expensive utensils. The victims were brought as gratitude on the occasion of joyful events, when they wanted to receive protection from danger or for blessing on a new cause. For resolving disputes, the gods were also consulted.

Gifts Mnemonies

In the pantheon, the most respected and beloved was the goddess of memory - Titanide Mnemozin. The legacy left by the ancient Greeks shows that the Greeks were widely educated in the most diverse sciences. Where did they draw their knowledge and inspiration for work? Momozina was the first assistant in such affairs. The daughter of Earth and Heaven - Gaia and Uranus, she lived in the mountain world and knew earthly problems. The goddess of memory in Greek mythology possessed the ability to extract from the past long-forgotten events. She also attributed the ability to foresee the future. This suggests that the inhabitants of Ancient Hellas understood the relationship between past and present events, as well as their influence on shaping the future. The goddess of memory gave names to objects and phenomena, and also arranged them, led to the system. The art of remembering, called mnemotechnics, came to us just from those times. The Greek goddess of memory left an inheritance, which, not being aware of this, we use to this day.

Muses - daughters of Mnemon

Mnemosyne conquered the beauty of the passionate and loving Zeus. To it, he appeared in human form. The main god of Olympus seduced the Titanide, pretending to be a simple shepherd. Nine consecutive nights, Zeus shared a bed with a beautiful goddess. The fruit of this alliance was the nine muses - patrons of universals, that is, arts. The legend says that the daughters of Zeus and Mnemosyns taught people to see and understand the beauty of the surrounding world, and their mother, the goddess of memory, helped to display her enthusiasm in the earthly, human embodiment. The Muses inherited from their father, a powerful, energetic and purposeful supreme god, such traits as enthusiasm, assertiveness, even in some sense obsession. Having chosen a suitable person, they endowed him with a talent that insistently demanded an exit, realization, so to speak, inspired by ideas. Then the Muses opened people access to their mother - Mnemosyne, from which they received the necessary knowledge to translate these ideas into reality.

To find the answer, you need to forget the superfluous

The ritual was as follows. In order to clear his consciousness of excess, the oracle was washed by the water of the river of oblivion - Lethe. Then followed the immersion in the waters of the river Mnemosyne. In the cave through which they flowed, a throne was built, which was invisibly occupied by the goddess of memory. Very often during the action of the prophetic, there was a horror that released him only after a new immersion into oblivion. After that, he could not remember and repeat what he said in a state of ecstasy. For this reason, the ritual required the presence of third parties. The goddess of memory in Greek mythology was not only remembering, but also forgetting. Ability to observe, fix minor and minor details, highlight the most significant, analyze, build the main storyline - that's what poets, actors, musicians, scientists and philosophers received from Mnemosyne.

The Image of Mnemosyne in Art

From the antique works of art that captured Mnemosyne, one can call the elegant marble statue and a mosaic panel made of multicolored pieces of enamel, depicting a sketch of the myth of one of the most beautiful goddesses of antiquity. It is located in the Antiochian Museum of Greco-Roman mosaic. Hesiod and Ovid preserved the memory of the goddess in her refined and refined verses.

In the new era, people of art also do not forget the legends about the goddess of reason and memories, as Mnemosyne is also called. Frederick Leighton portrayed her sitting on the throne in the painting "Mnemosyne - the Mother of the Muses". She is wrapped in a loose toga, and on her head lies a wreath of laurel leaves. Smooth lines, soft outlines and a palette of warm colors in his presentation best correspond to the image of a kind and wise mother of nine charming daughters. Her pensive and detached gaze seemed to be directed through time and space into an unknown infinity.

In the canvas of the English pre-Raphaelite Rossetti, the goddess of Mnemozin's memory stands in a light tunic of emerald color, which emphasizes the beauty of the golden-chestnut hair that conquered Zeus once. In her hand she has a memory lamp. Green eyes Mnemosins calmly and concentratedly look straight, as if piercing through you.

Maybe we should not delve into the distant history? The modern rapid rhythm of life practically leaves no time for thoughtful contemplation. However, having discarded the old artifacts as irrelevant, we risk at some point to be plunged into the Stone Age, at the time of the birth of human civilization, and we will have to start to re-acquire the experience that has very frivolously lost.
