Maidan: what is it? Value

In this article we will talk about such a concept as "Maidan".

Variability of the concept

Maidan - what is it? The answer can be turned to explanatory dictionaries. And you can conduct a sociological survey. Now, probably, you will not meet a person who would not have heard the word "Maidan". Back in the distant past, the peoples of the eastern countries denoted this word as an open space. In Iran, a large area in front of the Shah's palace is called Maidan. In Bashkiria the word is used in the name of traditional folk festivities. Maidan refers to a container for storing fish on the coast of the White Sea, an electric train following the route Kislovodsk - Mineral Waters in the Caucasus. This word also names a lot of administrative units in Belarus, Georgia, the Russian Federation, Serbia, and Ukraine. In the dictionaries of the Russian language, interpreting the names, the word "Maidan" is considered obsolete, it is used when describing the marketplace, where it was often possible to suffer from scammers and rascals.

Variability in Ukraine

Maidan - what is it? Ukraine has a large number of towns with a Maydan in the name, somewhere around three dozen. Known throughout the world is the central square of the city of Kiev, called Independence Square. In addition to the main square, in Kiev this name is carried by the metro station.

Area

Independence Square has a long history. From the very beginning, there was a swamp of the Perevesishche. And already in the first half of the XIX century, the Khreshchatytska Square was formed there. It is a huge market. She was named after the building of the City Duma building on her at the end of the same century, and Oktyabrskaya - after the construction of the monument to the October Revolution in 1977. When the Soviet Union broke up and Ukraine regained its statehood in 1991, the square became known as Maydan Nezalezhnosti. Capital restructuring, which began in 2001, transformed the area beyond recognition. New sculptures and beautiful fountains were built. The most notable object is the monument of Independence of Ukraine "Oranta-Ukraine". It is a tall white column with a beautifully designed foot. And the top is crowned with the sculpture of the girl-Bereginya, standing in a prayerful pose with arms outstretched, holding a branch of the viburnum.

Century XXI. Maidan: Kiev

What it is? The world remembered him as a separate image of the place where many events took place, and not always pleasant. These were rallies in which people expressed their desire for freedom and independence, for example, in the winter of 2001, an action was held to resign President Kuchma. The name "Maydan Nezalezhnosti" was fixed as a result of the Orange Revolution in 2004. To the question: "Maidan - what is this?" - you can answer that this is not only the location, but also the movement, direction, unification of the strength of people in the struggle for freedom and independence.

EuroMaydan

There is also such a definition - Euromaidan, a protracted protest launched on October 21, 2013. The spark for him was that the government did not sign an association with the European Union. All the following week the Protestants expressed their dissatisfaction. Sometimes there were skirmishes between the special forces of the militia and certain radical-minded citizens. In general, the country at that time was calm. At events that took place in Kiev, the mass media responded all over the world. Kiev, Maidan, Ukraine - these words were filled with the main columns of famous newspapers.

On the night of November 30, a new wave of indignation began after the dispersal of the protesters, who at that time had a man of two hundred. The media has been resounding with these events, there have been shots of dispersal of the demonstrators. The spontaneous protest overflowed Ukraine. Crowds came to Maidan with the demand of the resignation of the president. Radically inclined citizens took the Kyiv administration and the city council. On the square, the Berkut residents made a barrier preventing the activists from seizing the Cabinet and the Presidential Administration.

Events of 2014

What is Maidan in Ukraine, it became clear from a large number of live broadcasts. Later the militia managed to liberate several streets adjacent to the square. But the House of Trade Unions (which was the headquarters of the protesters) could not be liberated. The president after long negotiations has conceded to the protesters for the sake of preservation of calmness in the country and accepted the resignation of the Prime Minister N. Azarov. The result was not. By the beginning of armed clashes and the cessation of peaceful protests led to the bloodshed on the Maidan on February 20, 2014. It killed several special forces and dozens of protesters. Chances to remain in the post of the president did not remain. Yanukovych signed a decision on early elections and the removal of special forces in exchange for the release of captured buildings and the restoration of tranquility. The condition on the part of the government was fulfilled, than the radicals took advantage of and occupied the entire government quarter. To save his life, the president was forced to flee.

Conclusion

It is impossible to unequivocally assess the events that took place on the Maidan. The only important thing is that they happened and played a huge role. And in the rest it is necessary to understand historians. It can only be said that all these events are a manifestation of the will of the masses, led by radicals, which can occur in any democratic state. None of this is insured. Maidan - what is it? The word has acquired a new meaning, the development of which was greatly influenced by extralinguistic reasons - social, political, cultural, historical.
