Domestic armored vehicles have always been distinguished by high characteristics and solidity. Light armored vehicles appeared on the arsenal not so long ago, just ten years ago with the launch of KamAZ-43269 "Vystrel" on the market.

The need for a light armored car

The Second World War proved the effectiveness of using light armored vehicles, which were already in service in many countries. In the Soviet Union there was no such technology that would not only mobilely deliver small units to the battlefield, but also participated in it. Such a small armored car was created in the fifties of the last century (BTR-40), but it did not get distribution. The army used large-sized heavy armored cars, beginning with BTR-50.

But experience showed that participation in military operations in Afghanistan was not enough for infantry fighting vehicles and armored personnel carriers, forcing unobtrusively small groups of special forces units to use UAZ SUVs armed with large-caliber machine guns "Utes", while NATO used light multi-purpose armored vehicles HAMWV (widely known Hummer).

KamAZ-43269 "Shot" according to the plan of the creators and was to become such a light armored car, which, if necessary, could take part in the battle.

History of the BMP-97

The NPC at the Bauman Moscow State Technical University in the late nineties of the last century together with KamAZ OJSC, as KamAZ-4326 was taken for the base, began work on the project to create a light armored car with the code name "Shot".

Later KamAZ-43269 "Vystrel" received the designation BPM-97, that is, the "armored border vehicle", unlike the long-known infantry fighting vehicle - "infantry fighting vehicle".

It was assumed that a car with a steel hull would provide border guards for the protection of the state border.

But the first prototype because of the default in 1998 and lack of funding was released only in the spring of 2000, and during the next year two more cars were manufactured.

The tests of the pilot lot showed that the BPM-97 can pass more than 270 thousand kilometers without major repairs.

The KamAZ-43269 "Vystrel" (BPM-97) was supplied to the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation and exported to Kazakhstan and Azerbaijan in 2005.

Since a light armored car is convenient for transporting valuable civilian cargo, it was also allowed to be bought by civil companies.

BPM-97 was assembled from units and assemblies manufactured by KamAZ OJSC at the Remdizel plant in the same place in Naberezhnye Chelny. "Kurganmashzavod" produced an armored car for KamAZ-43269 "Vystrel". The number of armored vehicles produced today is about one hundred and fifty, and almost all of them are in service.

Construction of BPM-97

The use of the KAMAZ-4326 serial SUV assemblies allowed not only to quickly assemble armored vehicles, but made their manufacture and operation cheaper, to simplify repairs and to use the means intended for cars and KamAZ chassis for it.

Structurally KamAZ-43269 "Shot" is an armored car carrying a steel welded body which is divided, as in a classic car, into a compartment for ten people and a motor compartment. The body is mounted on the KamAZ-432 chassis.

Side and stern doors and roof hatches for personnel allow you to quickly boot and leave the car. The crew of two people is located in front of the compartment, and the seats for eight paratroopers are installed along the sides with their backs to them. Large inclined windshield and small windows in the aft doors and sides allow you to monitor the situation.

The autonomous heater allows, regardless of whether the engine is running, keep the operating temperature in the crew compartment and the landing area. In addition, the machine is equipped with a collective protection system with a special filtering unit.

Protection and armament

Armor car body KamAZ-43269 withstands a hit from three hundred meters of a large machine gun, and the feed and the lower part of the body - with thirty meters of rifle caliber 7.62 mm.

The armored bottom of the special form protects from the fragments of anti-personnel mines.

For shooting from the manual weapons of the landing party and the crew in the sides between the windows embrasures with flaps are provided.

The patrol armored vehicle can be equipped with a rotating turret, in which armament of various types is installed. This could be a Kord machine gun with a caliber of 12.7 mm, a KPVT machine gun, whose caliber is already 14.5 mm, a 30 mm grenade launcher Flame, a 2A42 gun also 30 mm caliber or even an anti-tank missile system. According to the power of weapons, "Vystrel" fully justifies its name.

Tactical and technical characteristics of KamAZ-43269 "Shot"

The engine characteristics allow an armored vehicle with a curb weight of 10.86 tons, and a full one with a cargo of 11.9 tons, to develop a speed on a good road up to 90 kilometers per hour, with a reserve without refueling more than 1000 kilometers. "Shot" can tow a trailer with a mass of 5 tons.

Diesel engine KAMAZ-740.10-20 V8 with a liquid cooling system, whose power is 240 hp, is located in the engine compartment, protected from direct hit by an inclined sheet of armor.

In addition to the two main protected (protected) fuel tanks with a total capacity of 250 liters, the car is equipped with an additional armored twenty-liter tank.

For KamAZ-43269 armored vehicle "Shot" TTX includes a high ground clearance of 385 mm, which along with large wheels 310-533 allows you to overcome fords depth of 0.8 m, ditches, the width of which is 0.6 m, and walls in half a meter in height.

Advantages of KamAZ-43269

The large capacity with small dimensions and high throughput is the main advantage, for which, in fact, KamAZ-43269 "Vystrel" (BPM-97) was created. The photo of the habitable compartment shows that ten people can be placed inside it without interfering with each other.

The characteristic contours of the forward nose of the machine, which allowed to install frontal armor at such an angle, provided the eighth class of protection of the forward part of the BPM-97.

The advantage of this light armored vehicle is the ability to vary weapons from the machine gun to the ATGM.

Even before the remarkable armored personnel carrier BTR-80 KAMAZ-43269 some advantages still have. First, it is more than 1.5 times cheaper, and the resource is much higher. In addition, with maintenance and repair, it requires less labor. Operational costs at the level of a conventional army multipurpose vehicle allow you to operate the car on public roads without restrictions. Drivers and maintenance personnel do not require special training for its operation.

Disadvantages of KamAZ-43269

It is unlikely that some of the design features of KamAZ-43269 can be considered a flaw. A large spare wheel covers one aft door. Causes difficulties in the rapid loading of troops and the opening of the hatchways, made in the lower armored cars.

In the course of operation in a combat situation, much more serious shortcomings became apparent. With prolonged loads, the springs were fractured or the cardan could break away, and in case of prolonged fire from a large-caliber machine gun, the armor cracked, and not all of them were completely unsystematic and unexpected, which caused complaints in the troops and, in the end, was refused from BPM-97.

However, the designers of KamAZ OJSC corrected these serious shortcomings, slightly changed the shape of the windshield and strengthened the front armor (it became both bulletproof and anti-fragmentation). So there was a modification of the car "Vystrel" called "Watch", which is positioned as a border patrol car, although it can be used for reconnaissance.

With small dimensions (5300 × 2500 × 2300 mm), Dozor is also very mobile, which protects it from direct hit of artillery shells in urban fighting conditions. Managed "Watch" as an ordinary large SUV, for example, "Ural".

Powerful weapons also include the deployment of a serious ammunition. It can be 1,300 rounds of 7,62 mm caliber and 500 rounds for a large-caliber machine gun; 350 grenades or 300 thirty-millimeter rounds instead of 500 cartridges. The ammunition can include 4 SAMs "Strela-3" or 8 ATGM "Cornet-M".

Modifications KamAZ-43269

In addition to the two-axle vehicles BPM-97 intended for use in border troops, KamAZ-43269 Dozor as a border and reconnaissance vehicle and a modernized Vystrel car, in 2008 designers of KamAZ offered, and the following year they assembled a prototype of a similar Armored car, but triaxial, intended for transportation of thirteen people.

Another machine based on KamAZ-43269 "Vystrel" was introduced in 2010 and was intended for remote search and destruction of modern controlled mine-blasting fences.

The special armored three-axle vehicle SBA-60-K2 with the beautiful name "Bulat", in which many units and technical solutions of KAMAZ-43269 "Vystrel" were used, was presented in 2011.

Light BMD (combat vehicle landing) "Warrior" and BRM (armored reconnaissance vehicle) "Otter" were created on the basis of KamAZ 43269 "Dozor".

The use of Kamaz-43269 cars

At present, modifications to the KamAZ-43269 are used as reconnaissance vehicles in the Caucasus. There are machines with equipment for unmanned light aircraft.

Kamaz-43269 "Vystrel" vehicles are provided in the strategic missile forces by all units that are responsible for protecting missile bases and mobile missile installations during patrols.

Instead of a heavy BTR-80 "Shot" is used by the Federal Service for the Execution of Penalties.

Technical thought goes forward, new types of technology are appearing, but KAMAZ-43269 "Shot" ("Dozor") continues to serve with dignity.
