Juniper has long since become fashionable. These evergreen bushes decorate parks and flower beds, ennoble the landscape of personal plots. In total, 75 species of plants are included in the genus, but about 10 of them are used to decorate modern cities and towns. One of the favorite types of landscape designers is the Horstmann juniper. It is with him we will get acquainted more closely.

Why is juniper called juniper?

The genus Juniperus is attributed to evergreen conifers and trees from the family Cypress. Different peoples have different names for these plants. For example, in Turkic language it is called "archa", in Russian there is a second name - "veres", in Ukrainian the plant is called "yalivets". But the familiar name "juniper" has a pre-Slavic roots. The approximate meaning of this word is knit or weave.

The international scientific name for this genus of plants was given in 1753. In Latin it sounds like Juniperus. The approximate value is interpreted in different ways. In some sources this is a "branch suitable for weaving," while in others it is a "prickly branch".

Description of Horstmann juniper

Junstman Horstmann - a tall vertical coniferous shrub whose branches are widely spaced and capable of occupying a large area. Extreme shoots at the ends of branches have a drooping shape, which gives to all bushes a "weeping" appearance. Adult plant is considered the most beautiful of all kinds of "weeping" junipers.

The average height of the juniper bush is 2 m. Some plants reach 2.5-3 m. Junsthorn ordinary Horstmann is capable of spreading branches so wide that it covers a circumference up to 2 m in diameter. The crown of this tree-shaped shrub is rather dense. It has the shape of a cone with a wide base.

Decorative needles of this species of juniper are colored in a dark green color. These are small, stiff and prickly spines. Junstman Horstmann differs trihedral form of conifers, which keep on the branches up to four years. The length of the needles is 1.5 cm.

Both tree-like and shrubby forms have a fibrous gray-brown bark and reddish-brown shoots. The plant lives to 200 years.

How does juniper flow?

Juniper Horstmann blooms in May. The plant has two kinds of flowers: male yellow, female green. Botanical masculine and female juniper flowers are called spikelets. Male spikelets are often solitary, formed in the sinuses of leaflets of last year's shoots or on lateral shoots. It has 3 cumulus stamens with longitudinally opening anthers. Female spikelets appear on axillary shortened branchlets.

After flowering on the bushes, berry cones are formed. Juniper Horstmann has a pine cone of a gray-blue color. Their shape is somewhat rounded, and the structure is fleshy. The size of each bump is about 0.5 cm. First they are green, but then their color changes, and a gray wax coating appears. Juniper berries look very decorative on the ornamental plant.

Junstman Horstmann: planting and caring for the plant

For a juniper of an ordinary Hortsmann it is worth choosing a sunny place. In the extreme case, a slight temporary shading is allowed. To the type of soil the plant does not make great demands. It will normally feel good on the poor, and on alkaline, and on acidic soils. It is best suited for sandy and loamy soils with good drainage, but can be planted even on rocky areas.

This kind of juniper does not like excess moisture, so it is not planted in lowlands and wetlands. Horstmann Horstmann can not grow if the soil is saline.

If the plant is purchased in the nursery, its root system will be provided with prolonged fertilizers. Most likely, the plant will be sold in a pot, and it can be planted in the soil without additional costs for 10 months a year (excluding January and February).

To the Horstmann juniper, the photo of which was presented above, it grew well, it should be watered regularly, and from the next spring after the landing, start feeding. For fertilizing, you can use complex fertilizers.

With the beginning of vegetation under the plant, it is necessary to loosen and mulch the soil. To protect against fungi and diseases, juniper is treated with fungicidal preparations. To prevent pests in the spring, preventive spraying with insecticides is carried out.

Phytoncidal properties

All varieties of juniper are common, and Horstmann is no exception, they have a high phytoncicide. This means that the plant ejects biologically active volatile substances that can kill or inhibit the growth of bacteria, fungi, small gnats and protozoa.

Since Horstmann's juniper releases special substances used in antitumor therapy, it is often planted on the territory of medical institutions.
