IPv6 without access to the Internet: what to do?

Although today the most common protocol for accessing the World Wide Web and the medium of data transmission is IPv4 (at least for Windows systems), a new development of the sixth version with the declared support in the latest Windows operating systems looks much more preferable. But! The catch is that often the user receives a message that uses IPv6 without access to the Internet.

What is the IPv6 protocol?

Consideration of the very issue related to IPv6 protocol should start from the beginning, that is, from an understanding of what it is in general.

Briefly and clearly, it is the system responsible for generating, assigning and distributing unique static and dynamic IP addresses to computer terminals scattered around the world through a DHCP server, and in such a way that no one's address is ever repeated. In principle, all the now known distribution protocols work on this principle. But the most promising of all is IPv6. Without access to the Internet today, few people imagine themselves, the number of computers or the same mobile devices has grown so much that the existing system simply can not generate new addresses.

IPv6 vs IPv4: Benefits

Now a bit of history. Initially, a protocol of this type was created back in the 70s of the last century and received the abbreviation IPv4. With the then population of the Earth (just over five billion), no one seriously considered that this system can create just four billion addresses. It was believed that this will be enough for all generations.

The protocol itself implied the use of a 32-bit address consisting of eight digits. So you could generate as many identifiers. As it turned out, the IPv4 protocol turned out to be inefficient (although it is still used today). The fact is that the amount of mobile equipment that has increased in recent years has put developers at a dead end (each device must be assigned a unique, never repeating external and internal identifier).

That's when it came to understanding that the system needs to be replaced. First, the ST / ST2 protocol was created, which received the unofficial name IPv5. In practice, he did not receive the distribution. Unless it was used in the form of an add-on to IPv4, and then, only some companies that tested it.

A global breakthrough was the IPv6 technology, which assumes the generation of an IP address of 128 bits in length. If anyone has not yet realized, the options for creating unique combinations here are millions of times larger. In general, according to many leading experts, the number of generated addresses is practically unlimited.

Note that the protocol itself, surprisingly as it sounds, was developed back in the early 90's, and distribution and software support was received only now, and not all providers. Thus, if a user sees a notification that the IPv6 protocol is installed in the system without access to the Internet, it may be very likely that the provider itself does not support such a technology for accessing the Internet. In other words, it simply does not have a DHCPv6 server installed, which is responsible for all addresses.

Activate the protocol

Now let's start practical steps. We begin the statement of the problem with the condition that we have an IPv6 configuration without access to the Internet. Windows 7 and higher allow you to use these settings, but only if the access is supported at the provider level. Otherwise, all configuration actions will be meaningless.

First, you should take a few simple steps to make sure that the protocol is actually activated. To do this, the command line (Win + R + cmd) prescribes ipconfig for a single terminal user or ipconfig / all for machines located on the local network and directly connected to this computer. If the IPv6 protocol is not displayed on the screen, we proceed to configure the system.

First, in the properties of network connections selected from the standard control panel, you should put a "tick" in the line of the protocol (access can be made much easier if you enter the command ncpa.cpl in the "Run" menu).

Now you need to use the property button located at the bottom right. Our window will appear in the window that will open.

Conventional settings

Generally, if the provider has an active DHCPv6 server running on its own network, problems should not arise.

Receiving settings for the IP address and DNS server are set to the machine. The server itself will allocate addresses to machines connected to it.

Manual setting of parameters

If for any reason this is not possible, you can try to use the manual settings. It should be noted that the address of a particular terminal does not have to match the router's address. In the router, the last digit is a unit, but for a computer you can specify, for example, the value 10, 100 or 101 - as you please. All the same, the range of addresses is in the range from 0 to 256.

Here it is worth noting also the fact that in a situation where we have an active connection through IPv6 without access to the Internet, Windows 8 or any other system can request an alternative configuration, the settings of which are most often associated with the introduction of correct DNS server addresses.

IPv6 without access to the Internet: how to fix the situation on different OS and for different operators

As for alternative settings for any operating system, here you need to know a few nuances. For example, activate the protocol in the "expir" preferably using the following commands:

Netsh (then Enter) - Interface (then Enter) - ipv6 (then Enter) - install (again Enter).

But that's not all. In some cases, it may be necessary to set the address of the preferred and alternate DNS server in manual mode. Immediately it is worth paying attention to the fact that the address will consist of sixteen digits and should not be set up according to the operator of provider services.

So, for example, the most common and, so to speak, working configuration is the configuration of Google services, in which the address of the last four digits can represent either four eights, or two eights and two quadruples. For the service "Yandex" - even worse. There it is necessary to prescribe such combinations of letters and numbers that the user, as they say, the head will go around.

Now we consider some special cases. So, we have an activated IPv6 protocol without access to the Internet. We take Rostelecom as an initial example. In this case, the problem, again, is only to specify the correct server addresses (there is no question of a possible reboot of the router, a set-top box or any other device).

In the DNS address line, you can register either the eights and fours, as mentioned above, or use the settings for "Yandex", which means entering the value 77.88.8.8. Works without problems.

And a few words about the IPv6 protocol (without access to the Internet). ByFly, for example, (the Belarusian operator) has quite a lot of communication problems. As follows from user feedback, the connection speed is usually limited to a limit of 600 kbps (if no fiber is installed). You understand that with this quality, there is no need to talk about any settings that could significantly affect the bandwidth. Although the cable speed rarely exceeds 50 Mbit / s at the cable plant, whatever they say.

However, as an option, the above parameters can be used. Separately, it should be noted that in some cases, when creating a connection, you need to use unencrypted protocols and passwords, namely PAP and CHAP. Alas, the security of such connections raises legitimate doubts.

Functional Testing

Finally, let's proceed from the fact that all the settings are correct. Now it remains to verify whether the protocol actually works.

To do this, again, use the command line with ipconfig. After all the procedures, the protocol with the assigned address will be indicated on the screen. Do not like it that way? You can enter the center of public access control and networks and look at the connection status. In extreme cases, you can just click on the connection icon in the system tray (for example, if you use Wi-Fi) and go to the desired menu.

It remains to add that IPv6 without access to the Internet (network) is not the biggest problem of modern users who use IPv4 protocol on home / office terminals or local servers . In fact, by default the IPv6 system, although it is claimed in support of the same Windows-systems, is nevertheless deactivated, so as not to create unnecessary difficulties for users.

For that matter, the issue of activation and configuration of this protocol is relevant only if the technology is supported by the operator providing the provider services. Otherwise, you can not even try to adjust something.
