Installing RAM with your own hands

For some reason, among most computer users there is an opinion that immersion in the bowels of his pet with a screwdriver in his hands is the destiny of extremely unfriendly bearded men in worn sweaters, and there's nothing for a mere mortal to do. Today we will try to at least partially discredit this myth.

Modules of computer RAM - components of modern desktop computers as important, so and vulnerable. They are very sensitive to overheating and voltage drops. Dust, accidentally trapped in a memory slot, can cause the computer to hang, or even make it impossible for him to continue working. As a result, the user (including the most ordinary, not possessing special knowledge and skills) may well encounter the need for such a phenomenon as the replacement of RAM.

Installing RAM on the motherboard may be required in the event that the user wants to make himself and a computer a gift and slightly increase the amount of "RAM". Still, the rule that there is not much memory, does not become obsolete from the time computers appear.

In both described cases, often resort to the help of acquaintances, whose knowledge in the near-computer sphere is above average. Sometimes, if it's not a pity to spend money, they cause some familiar acquaintances who, for a fee, will help to carry out all the necessary manipulations. And then they are surprised that money is required for 5 minutes of work with them.

Well, we are economical users, so let's try to figure out how to install RAM.

Stage one - you need to decide what type of memory you need. There are several ways for this. The first (if the computer is still running) is to use special utilities that allow you to determine the computer's configuration without opening the case . To determine the type of memory, a completely free utility CPU-Z, which will give you a lot of useful information about the processor and the motherboard, is quite suitable. What is important is that this utility is absolutely free.

If the installation of RAM is necessary due to the untimely "death" of the old modules, you can use the documentation for the motherboard that came with the computer. If you can not find the documentation, you'll have to open the case and pull out the modules with your own hands. To do this, just gently press down on the two clamps that hold each memory module from the ends. The memory bar itself will come out of the connector. After that, you can either read the exact characteristics (frequency, volume and type of memory) on the sticker that is on the bar itself, or carry it to the store and show it to the seller-it's not for him to get used to.

Well, you bought what you wanted, and now the most crucial step is installing RAM into the computer. We open the case, find the memory slots. As a rule, they are on the motherboard to the right of the processor, much less often from above.

In most modern computers memory modules are better to install in pairs, and the modules must be from the same manufacturer and are based on the same chips. Ie, it's better to buy a pair of slats at once. In this case, you will achieve memory operation in two-channel mode, which will slightly increase its performance. Much less often there are computers with three- and four-channel organization of RAM, but this is still a rarity. Slots, in which you need to install the memory at the same time, are usually marked with a certain color. Therefore, if you are replacing memory, you need to pull out two modules from slots of the same color. If you add - insert new modules in the same slots.

Gently insert the memory module into an empty slot. After making sure that the notches on the module coincided with the protrusions in the connector itself, gently push the bar. It should enter the slot without excessive effort, and the latches on the sides - automatically snap into place and securely fix the memory module in the connector. If this does not happen, do not try to snap them yourself. It is better to remove the bar and try again.

Yes, it goes without saying that the installation of RAM and its extraction should take place on a computer completely disconnected from the power supply.

When the modules are installed, we put on the housing cover, connect the power and turn on the computer. If you did everything correctly, at the boot stage of the BIOS you can enjoy the RAM counter, which will show a new amount of "operatives".

That's all!
