Hypoparathyroidism postoperative: symptoms and treatment of disease

Hypoparathyroidism - a fairly common endocrine disorder, which is accompanied by either a decrease in the amount of parathyroid hormone, or an immunity to receptors. In any case, such a disease is fraught with dangerous consequences. To date, the most frequently diagnosed postoperative hypoparathyroidism. As the statistics testify, quite often hormonal failure occurs just after a surgical operation on the organs of the neck.

Postoperative hypoparathyroidism and its underlying causes

As a rule, a decrease in the number of parathyroid hormones develops as a postoperative complication. The cause may be surgical treatment of thyroid diseases, in particular its partial or complete removal due to cancer.

In some cases, parathyroid glands are damaged during surgery. But most often hypoparathyroidism develops in those cases when the procedure damaged the main blood vessels that supply blood to these endocrine glands. On the other hand, sometimes excision of the thyroid leads to the formation of fibrous tissues, which also disrupts normal blood flow and trophic organs.

In any case, it is worthwhile to understand that postoperative hypoparathyroidism is a very dangerous disease. The fact is that the parathyroid hormone maintains a normal balance of calcium and phosphorus. With a decrease in its level, a decrease in the concentration of calcium and a simultaneous increase in the amount of phosphorus is observed.

Hypoparathyroidism postoperative: the main symptoms of the disease

In some cases, this disease is chronic and is accompanied by blurred, not too noticeable symptoms. Others have a latent form of the disease, which can only be determined during a complete examination of the body.

It's not a secret for anyone that the balance of electrolytes is of great importance. And with a change in the concentration of calcium and phosphorus, there is a violation of the permeability of the cell walls. Hypoparathyroidism after surgery affects primarily the muscles and nervous system.

Muscle cramps are the main symptom of the disease. Similar seizures, as a rule, occur several times a week, depending on the amount of parathyroid hormone in the blood. First, patients feel a tingling sensation in the skin, after which intensive muscle contractions begin: the upper and lower limbs, as well as the facial muscles, often suffer .

It should be noted that convulsive seizures can be observed in internal organs. For example, with spasm of the muscles of the digestive tract, constipation and severe pain in the abdomen are observed. But with convulsions of intercostal and diaphragmatic muscle fibers appear shortness of breath and respiratory movement.

As the development of the disease affects the central nervous system, which is accompanied by mental disorders.

Postoperative hypoparathyroidism: treatment

Unfortunately, it is not always possible to get rid of such a violation. Nevertheless, the prognosis for patients is favorable, since with the help of modern drugs it is easy to prevent the appearance of seizures.

In particular, anticonvulsant drugs are used for prophylaxis. In some cases, patients are prescribed sedatives. In addition, you need to take funds containing calcium, as well as vitamin D. During an exacerbation, it is extremely important to adhere to the appropriate diet. The diet should consist of products rich in calcium (milk, cottage cheese, eggs, cheese), but at the same time it is necessary to exclude food containing phosphorus.
