How is the SSD configured?

Setting up SSD Windows 7 is done in several stages. For stable operation in the BIOS in the settings for the SATA controller, you need to set the AHCI mode. If you leave the IDE, some operations for removable media may not be available. In addition, the installation of an operating system on the SSD must necessarily be accompanied by a regime change.

If you decide to install Windows 7, then there will be no problems, since the installation on the SSD drive does not differ from the HDD. The fact is that the new version of the shell for personal computers is slightly changed, and all the necessary drivers necessary for the proper operation of the operating system, including AHCI, are already integrated into the structure of the installation files.

However, setting up SSD as the installation base for Windows XP requires special attention, because there are no drivers in this version, so when installing the OS, a blue screen may appear. This is a consequence of the fact that the installation disk could not find the information carrier.

In this case, it is recommended to find a different version of Windows XP, in which the AHCI driver will be integrated. In addition, after the OS is installed, you should find the utilities yourself for proper operation, since the XP version does not know how to find such drivers in automatic mode.

Setting up Windows 7 for SSD is not required, since after the first service pack, the driver search is not necessary - the OS will do it itself. It is recommended that you remove other media when installing the system. Otherwise, the installation may fail, and the SSD setting will be made with errors.

To save disk space, disable automatic defragmentation and call it as needed. The matter is that OS installation on SSD, as a rule, is made for a reserve or for data mobility. Therefore, there is no need to use all the standard functions of the system, as this reduces free space.

The SSD is configured in such a way that the media is maximally unloaded. It is recommended that you avoid creating recovery control points and hibernation. If you need to install additional software, then you can use the version of the same OS installed on the HDD-media, where all the necessary functions are included.

However, it is not recommended to disable the paging file, because some versions of the OS still create it, and if they do not create it themselves, they start to give out errors. Therefore, configuring SSD implies a swap file, but you can reduce its size.

All these settings are relevant if the disk is small. In this case, disabling the above functions does not affect the performance of the system in any way. Therefore, to make the adjustment should be meaningful.

There is an opinion that SSD-media deteriorates after frequent overwriting and quickly fails. The truth is there, but it should be noted that such carriers are designed for a huge number of cycles of cell re-recording, and with frequent changes of information, the disks will last up to 20 years. With less active mode of rewriting - up to 50 years.

At the same time, conventional HDDs, although they do not have a fixed service life, but are equipped with moving parts that can quickly fail out of order, than "infrequent" SSDs. So the choice is for the user.
