How and what is the treatment of wood from decay?

Wood is an excellent material, but insects and rotting can cause irreparable damage to it. Insects, though significantly harm, still can not be compared in terms of the scale of destruction with putrefactive processes. Therefore, when building buildings from this material, the processing of wood from decay is so important.

It should be borne in mind that rot develops best in a warm and humid environment. Its speed is directly affected by the way the material was prepared before the construction was started.

That is why the processing of wood from decay begins even at the stage of logging. It is necessary to know that the humidity of the freshly chopped tree trunk varies within 80%, and therefore it must be thoroughly dried. It is best to use for this natural weathering, the duration of which should be at least one year.

Until recently, the treatment of wood from decay was carried out with a solution of copper sulfate. Our ancestors for the same purposes used tar, as well as resin. In domestic conditions, it is often possible to see how used engine oil is used to prevent the development of rot. This method, although effective, is not suitable for living quarters, and the issues of preserving ecology play no small role here.

All methods can be divided into two large groups. The first are diffusion methods, when the surface of a tree is treated with special penetrating compounds. In another case, surface treatment with paints and polymer compounds is used, which prevent access of air and moisture to the wood, preventing its decay.

How can one understand that the treatment of wood from rotting of the first type is more effective? As a rule, antifouling pastes are made from an antiseptic, filler and thickener, which gives the substance the required degree of viscosity. In particular, for bitumen paste, bitumen is used as such. Antiseptic properties it tells a solution of green soap.

Silicate paste is a homogeneous mixture of stone oil, liquid glass and several fungicides. Note that for the effective action of such compounds moisture of the wood itself is important, which should be within 40%. If this index is less, then the diffusion process does not practically go. In this case, the treatment of wood against decay does not bring tangible benefits.

For disinfection of fresh wood, a solution of potassium dichromate on sulfuric acid can be used. The advantage of this method is that it effectively disinfects not only the tree itself, but even the soil around it. This is an excellent tool for processing the lower rims of buildings.

Lately, many new synthetic drugs have appeared. But always it is necessary to remember that any tool for wood processing should be not only effective, but also safe for people's health. Unfortunately, powerful chemical preparations, although they can protect the tree for a long time against all kinds of rot, are often just dangerous.

Care should be taken to formulations based on salts of zinc and tin, since they are rather poisonous.
