Houses in Wright style (photo)

In recent decades, houses in the Wright style have become popular. The combination of functionality, space and unity with nature - that's what distinguishes this style from others.

Lloyd Wright, the founder of the style, argued that houses should be one with nature. In his opinion, a beautiful house can not disturb the landscape. Another statement of the architect - houses should not be the same, as there are no identical people. It is on these allegations that Wright's style is built, also called Orient.

A bit of history

American architect Frank Lloyd Wright did not just founded his own style. He created a new direction in the philosophy of architecture. His projects are characterized by the idea of continuity of space. This can be seen as his disagreement with classical principles in architecture.

The influence on Wright's thinking was on the eastern, or rather, Japanese, architecture, which he studied in the 1890s. This taught him to eliminate unnecessary things in projects and to exclude the unimportant. Under the influence of Japanese architecture, he develops his system of interstitial internal spaces.

Houses in Wright style (photo above) differ from each other, but have common features. Architects do not create identical copies of houses. They only preserve their stylistic characteristics.

Common features of Wright's style

Houses in the style of Lloyd Wright are great for suburban construction. Inspiration for creating architectural masterpieces was served by oriental traditions, expressed in hinged roofs, strongly protruding from the basement, as well as the steppes of America with their vast expanses that seem to merge with the horizon. Hence the main features inherent in the style.

Horizontal lines are obligatory for houses of this direction of architecture. All buildings (even two-storeyed ones) seem to be spread along the ground. Hence the effect of "earthiness".

Flat hinged roofs are another highlight that distinguishes all buildings. The roof necessarily extends from the wall and helps create a "horizontal silhouette". Often between the floors there are also protrusions, which have to create long balconies.

Segmentation. The protruding roof between the floors, the horizontal lines of the roof and the strict lines of minimalism visually divide the entire building into elongated segments. The effect is reinforced by the columns, which are often found in projects. Looking at a modern house in the style of Wright, you might think that it was collected from separate parts (cubes).

Large windows, from floor to ceiling. They are usually decorated with a frame. This helps the building to fit into the landscape, to become a part of nature. The abundance of light makes the rooms even more spacious.

Use of natural materials. Stone and wood are found as often as glass and concrete. The house is divided into zones due to the use of different materials. Recently, siding has been increasingly used.

Interior of houses

Projects of houses in Wright style suggest unique interiors. A vivid example of this is the "non-traditional" division of housing areas. At the same time, a combined kitchen with a living room, as well as a bath and a bathroom, can occupy the largest area. The architect preferred to use fewer rooms, but larger ones. No division of the building into many small rooms, he did not recognize.

Feature of style - spacious rooms with high ceilings, which smoothly replace each other. The open space of rooms is filled with natural light through panoramic windows. The division into zones occurs due to the use of furniture as partitions. As a border, different materials are used for wall finishing.

Features of interior design

The interior of the rooms is planned in such a way that the space and furnishings of the premises are a single whole. Preference is given to low subjects. Low vertical lines will look great against the background of large windows.

Choose a simple, comfortable and functional furniture. Its shade should fit in the color palette, but differ from the color of the wall. Arrange it without niches and unfilled spaces.

The external design of the building (segmentation, angularity), continues in the atmosphere of the rooms. A striking example of this - square lamps, which further emphasize the space.

The combination of different materials is typical for interior decoration. For example, next to the classical cuisine can be located stone-trimmed dining room.

The interior of the house in Wright's style is decorated with calm, neutral color solutions. No bright chaotic drawings and pretentious patterns.

American prairies are reminiscent of ethnic style and minimalism. All houses are striking in their simplicity and uniqueness.

Projects of houses in Wright style

To imagine a project of a house in prairie style, it is worth paying attention to its individual elements.

The roof is always wide, three- or four-sloped and has a slight slope. It is visible from any direction. The cornices are wide, considerably removed from the wall.

Panoramic windows from above are connected directly to the roof. They are located symmetrically in groups, in the center or along the perimeter. Windows are always decorated, for example, vertical imposts, trimmed in the tone of the facade, and from below comes a strip for concrete or wood.

The facade is divided horizontally by the use of various materials. Parapets, windows, awnings and other parts of the facade are trimmed with decorative stripes.

Features of the layout

Houses in Wright style (up to 150 sq. M including) are very spacious and filled with light. This distinguishes them from all other buildings.

The layout of the house is primarily aimed at the comfort of living. The premises are spacious, conveniently connected to each other. They smoothly pass into each other, space "continuously".

Another feature of the Wright-style house is a large outdoor terrace. Without it, not a single country house.

Modern vision of houses in Wright style

Modern architects use the basic ideas that Wright defined. These include wide cornices, sloping roof, console plans and a vast interior space. The facades are almost not decorated. The center of the building, a fireplace room, is a symbol of family unity. Geometry of houses is built of rectangles. It is complicated by glazed galleries, balconies, columns, flower beds. Windows allow to make attic spaces light, and facades - rhythmic.

Houses in Wright style consist only of rectangular and square rooms, which differ in the size and height of ceilings. The plan grid contains only right angles. Exceptions are public buildings where circles were used.

The influence of Lloyd Wright's architecture on housing construction is undeniable. It tries to combine modern achievements and nature.
