"Grief onions": the meaning of phraseology, history and examples

Expressions, sayings, proverbs and sayings die, disappear when they stop using. To use stable phrases, you need to know their meaning. But the content of some expressions from a person eludes with the passage of time. We do not want the diamond of folk wisdom "onion grief" (the meaning of phraseology, to put it concretely) was lost in the unknown grains of the centuries, so let's talk about it today.

Value

So they say about frustration, which is not worth the shed tears. For example, a small child is very fond of sweet, but that sweet, which he gave his mother, he lost. And he began to roar so much that he bothered his whole house with his behavior. What is it? Here, the stable word combination "grief onion" (the meaning of phraseology will only become clearer in the future) fits perfectly. Onion sufferings are remembered when the observer thinks that griefs are not worth the trouble of getting up to tears. But the one who cries, thinks at this tragic moment: "What does he understand, this observer! It was not his own sweet! " The question of the legitimacy of tears will be revealed below and a little later, but for now let's talk about the vegetable involved in the story.

And here is the onion?

Everyone who has at least once cleaned this herb plant will not be lied to: if you do it with a knife, there will be a lot of tears. It can not be said that in the process of processing onion, a person pours the sea and ocean of tears, but if one does not resort to tricks, the water from the eyes flows constantly. One can not but agree with the fact that such a "vegetable" disorder has no special reason.

So with a person who worries about a trifling matter. In reality, from an observer's point of view, there are no reasons for tears: the child was taken away from the candy or he lost it. The schoolboy got a deuce for a test in the classroom or even in a quarter - it's all nonsense, although, of course, depending on what to compare. We hope that the meaning of the phrase "grief onion" is now clear (the meaning of phraseology has already been revealed).

On the Relativity and Absoluteness of Suffering for Man

Suppose we understand that the external observer is the point of the report in the problem of "onions". And what to do with someone who is directly experiencing moral or physical torture? The well-known psychologist Viktor Frankl said that suffering is absolute. They fill all the spaces of the soul, regardless of their real scale.

For example, a girl broke her nail, or a person suffers hunger. At a certain point in the subjective experience, these sufferings are equal, although from the point of view of the average person this state of affairs seems absurd and unjust. But if it were possible to measure the degree of subjective stress, then in both cases it would be equal. Therefore, do not rush to use the "onion grief" idiom (the meaning of phraseology was discussed a little higher) when you see a strong emotional overload of another person in what you think is a nonsense. Maybe, for him the motive is not so small.

Let's return to the child with candy. Yes, for an adult this is all nonsense, you think, candy. And for a baby, sweetness is the goal of life, the alpha and omega of existence. Imagine, the philosopher has found a universal answer about the meaning of human life and suddenly forgot it! Can you imagine his despair? Like this. And speak, sweet.

Therefore, before you use the expression "grief onions", you need to think carefully. It, of course, comforts, but also offends.
