Gardens, squares and parks of Kharkiv: description, addresses and reviews

One of the largest industrialized cities of Ukraine is Kharkov. It is a beautiful city with a rich history. There are many attractions that are interesting not only for experts in the field of history and architecture, but also for tourists.

Like many southern cities, Kharkiv is famous for its huge number of green spaces. There are 150 public gardens, 5 gardens and more than 30 parks. Today we will present the most popular parks in Kharkiv with addresses, reviews.

"Ukrainian Disneyland" (Sumskaya str., 81)

This is how Kharkiv people call the Central Park of Culture and Rest. M. Gorky. Until 1919 it was called the Nikolaevsky (or Zagorodniy) Park, after the revolution it became a municipal park, nevertheless at all times it was considered the main city park.

Its territory is huge - more than 130 hectares. In the south it is restricted by Vesnin Street and the buildings of the former rocket school. Sumy street borders on the park in the east. Elite private settlement adjoins the park massif from the north.

The first trees in this area were planted in 1895, and in twelve years, when they grew a little, the grand opening of the park took place. The layout of the alleys resembled the Bois de Boulogne: The chestnut and lime alleys were united and meant for horseback riding. In 1932, the park area was increased to 130 hectares. In 1938, after the death of M. Gorky, the park was given his name. At this time there was already quite a developed infrastructure, which was almost completely lost during the Great Patriotic War and was gradually restored in the postwar years.

Recovery

In 1952, at the entrance to the park appeared colonnade. Its authors were the architects EA Svyatchenko, AG Krynkin. The monument to Gorky was established in 1980. The fountain at the end of the main alley was restored in 2007. In the composition of the park, preference was given to group plantings. Contrasting tree species were used: emerald larch and light birch, red oak and pine, silvery maples shaded oak trees. In addition, there are many flowering shrubs.

The parks of Kharkov are beautiful at any time of the year. In the summer they amaze with a variety of colors, and in the autumn they admire the gold of plants preparing for winter rest. Many townspeople and visitors of the city are sure that Gorky Park is especially beautiful in winter when the earth is wrapped in a white blanket. The southern part of it is distinguished by elements of regular planning. Alleys were planted here, group plantings were created, magnificent flower gardens were broken, in 1977 the memorial complex of Glory was opened. Parks and squares of Kharkov today are favorite places of rest for townspeople. With pleasure they are visited by the guests of the city. Comfort here feel both adults and children. In the park to them. Gorky built a lot of attractions, works the cinema "Park", kids can ride on the children's railway or drive with adults on a cable car. For fans of active recreation, sports grounds and tennis courts are built.

Park Artem (Plekhanovskaya st., 134)

It is located in the area named after Artem, which (like the park) was named after the revolutionary Fedor Sergeyev, who bore the party pseudonym Comrade Artem. The park was laid in 1934. Its formation lasted for three years (1934-1937 gg.). The architects Yu. V. Ignatovsky and V. I. Dyuzhikh, as well as dendrologists KD Kobezsky and AI Kolesnikova worked on the project.

The park covers an area of 100 hectares. Along most of the avenues a Crimean lime tree was planted. In addition to it, quince, common poplar, common hawthorn , three-lobed gledic and many fruit trees grow here. In the west the park is bordered by the Balashovka district, in the south it adjoins the Artyom settlement.

Children's Park (Plekhanovskaya Street)

Of course, such a huge territory does not occupy all the parks. The city of Kharkiv has a large, but very popular Children's Park. It is bounded by the streets of Rustaveli, Plekhanovsky, Nikitinsky lane and Rudnev Square.

This park is closed from the roadway and around the perimeter is fenced, which makes it a great place for resting parents with children. The main decoration of the park is a three-tier fountain, equipped with a water circulation system. He is the only one in the city.

In 1804, at the request of the first guardian of the Kharkov Academic District, Count S.O. Pototsky, the University was allocated a vast territory of about thirty dessiatins for the botanical garden. Part of the land the university acquired in the guardianship of Kantemir (Kantemirovsky garden), part provided free of charge to the military inhabitants, and another part was bought from them for money. On this land was organized the Upper, or English, garden. It was intended for public festivities, and the lower became a botanical garden.

Further development

After 1917, the university garden (today - the Shevchenko City Garden) was alienated from the university. The greenhouse for Victoria regia and the hedge around the botanical garden were destroyed. At that time, many valuable bushes and trees were destroyed, the vegetation of granite and chalk outcrops, sections of sands and steppes was destroyed.

In the twenties of the last century the garden area has decreased. He changed several times from one departmental subordination to another and was repeatedly on the verge of closure. However, in 1930 the Research Institute of Botany began its work, and the park was joined to it.

Ten years later (in 1940) the Botanical Garden was separated from the Institute of Botany, recognizing it as an independent structural unit in the university system.

The Botanical Garden in our days

Today the famous garden is located in two territories of almost forty-two hectares. There are five research departments in its structure.
