Fist rotary (UAZ). Description and Replacement

Fist rotary is designed to change the direction of the car by increasing pressure on the steering levers, which provides a change in the angle of the wheels.

This part of the vehicle is one of the most significant. The swivel fist (UAZ, Volkswagen, BMW - is not important) is the basis for the hub and is attached to other parts due to ball bearings. Usually, two types of parts are distinguished: with a hub and with a spindle.

Approximate cost in the market

Another can be a swinging fist left or right. Externally, they are almost identical, but since these parts are directly related to the steering, it is best to be reinsured. On one of them is located the steering wheel sow , on the other there is no exit to the longitudinal traction. It is for these reasons that their cost differs.

How to make the right choice?

When buying on the market, you should pay attention to the saddle, where the bearing of the rotary knuckle is mounted (the inner cage should sit flat without the help of a hammer), as well as the appearance of the part: whether there is corrosion, whether there are cracks or curvatures. Any crack can subsequently turn into a very difficult problem to solve.

Part construction

The hub and hub parts are referred to as the hub and brake disc. In addition to the most important part, they are part of the basic set of spare parts designed for steering.

So, the first is the protective casing, then the cotter pin, the swivel fist, the suspension arm, the bearing for the hub, the lock ring and the drive hinge (outer). To this list, you can add bolts, nuts, brake disc with caliper and bearing.

But the most important in this list is still a rotary fist. UAZ will serve as a car, on the example of which a scheme will be constructed for the removal of the kulak.

Replacement and repair

Despite the apparent complexity, the replacement of such a detail as a rotary fist is not particularly difficult. The first thing to do is put the vehicle on the handbrake, then under the rear wheels substitute the rollers and lift the front of the machine with a jack.

Further the technological process is carried out according to the following plan:

  1. Remove the brake disc.
  2. Remove the pin securing.
  3. Remove it in the assembly with the wheel release coupling, the brake disk shield and the hub.
  4. Remove the axle shaft.
  5. Separate the tip of the steering rod from the pivot.
  6. Remove the bolts securing the ball joint to the flange of the axle housing.
  7. Remove the wheel stop.
  8. Having fitted the assembly, press out the shank of the ball bearing from the half-axle housing. To do this, use a puller for ball joints.
  9. Carefully remove the desired part, in our case, the fist rotary.

The ambassadors for the replacement of the fist of the action should be executed in the reverse order, without forgetting to put the rotation stopper in place. For repair, the swivel fist should be clamped in the vise and disassembled by unscrewing the cuff mounting bolts, the stop bolt with the lock nut. Further, the cuff clip and felt seal are removed. At the end, the gland of the ball joint is removed.

The most difficult thing behind, is that which requires attention. Carefully remove the ball bearing. Approximately this happens the repair and replacement of the pivot.

Replacement kingpins

There are more details that need to be replaced from time to time - these are pivots. To replace them, you have to remove the pivoting fist and clamp it in the vice. After that, with the help of the mandrel, it is necessary to dislodge the kingpin bushings and properly clean the passages under the grease and under the replaced spare part in the fist.

After the mandrel, the new bushings are installed so that the holes in them coincide with the holes on the fist, and the open ends look towards the beam fixed on the front axle.

Simultaneously unfold both bushings to the required diameter. After that, clean the bushings and apply a thin layer of grease. Then, by lubricating the sealing rings and ducts in the fist bosses, the rings themselves are installed.

Possible damage

Despite the fact that the swivel fist is one of the most "long-playing" parts of the car, its damage is just a matter of time. Sometimes a protective cover can crack, giving access to dust and sand inside, so periodically it is necessary to control its integrity.

In the event that it fails, the best option is a replacement. Often you can see on the pivoting fist oil leaks, indicating that the seal of the stuffing box / semi-axle is loose. Here, you just need to change the oil seal to a better one. Such problems often occur in cars that have an accident.

How to protect against wear

Those car owners who have recently bought UAZ, often hear unpleasant sounds when rotating the steering wheel, as if metal rubs against metal without any lubrication. Often it does. How can you protect your fists with a domestic car? Here the ubiquitous lithol comes to the rescue.

If there is no experience in repairing cars, then you can turn the left swivel fist, as well as the right one, on the outside only. For people who are more knowledgeable in automotive mechanics, this method is suitable: after unscrewing the circular packing, move it to the center of the car and add more lithol to the formed gap.

These operations are carried out after cleaning the car from transportation paint or polyethylene. Also check the presence of the seal.

Design of the rotary knuckle

The most widespread design of the pivoting fist is the so-called "direct cross". Although most of them look almost the same, but there are differences in size. One may be slightly larger, another slightly less.

A rotary fist is usually made of steel. Thanks to this material, such an important detail can withstand enormous loads. But with all this, the easier the fist part is, the better will be the depreciation and controllability. Therefore, designers are trying to get the optimal ratio of weight to strength.

Seats on the auto parts are specially designed for fixing the mudguards, which do not allow penetrating into the bearing of the hub to all kinds of garbage. The body is designed in such a way that it is convenient to screw the suspension elements.

You may wonder why most of the article is devoted to the UAZ car? The answer is this: because it is a domestic car that has proved itself to be well-proven - easy to maintain, reliable on the road.

Many underestimate this car, considering that foreign cars are better, but this is far from being the case. In many respects, UAZ, even released in the Soviet Union, surpasses many modern off-road vehicles, but, unfortunately, it remains unrecognized.

Although made of steel, a swivel fist is one of the weak points of any car, often because of bad roads. It is worth watching, because at the critical moment it is this part of the steering that can help to avoid an accident.
