Tourism event: the essence of the phenomenon

What is event tourism? What are its features? One small example will help answer this question. Imagine a small ancient town with a certain set of historical and architectural attractions, several museums. And then one day the local authorities of this town decide: to establish a festival of aeronautics. A couple of years, thousands of tourists come here to see how dozens of huge and colorful balloons rise to the sky.

That's what tourism events look like literally. In the English literature there is also such a thing as "event-tourism". The word event can be translated into Russian exactly as an "event", "show", "ceremony". Thus, eventful tourism is nothing more than the movement of people to attend an event that takes place outside their permanent residence.

Events that attract tourists can be very different. For example, it can be a music festival with performances of famous rock bands, or a set of street theatrical performances. Active movements of travelers provoke some sports (for example, the World Cup or Olympiad).

Millions of people leave their cities and villages every year to visit one of the festivals, etc.

Events are attractive because they are unique, authentic and never repeated. In other words, to get bright and exceptional emotions, a tourist needs to be in a certain place and at a certain time.

What is the role of event tourism? It can perform several important functions. For example:

  • Attract new tourists;
  • To stimulate the development of the infrastructure of the settlement;
  • To promote the revival of "depressed" cities and towns;
  • Help in the formation of a positive image of the region.

Event-tourism in the world: the most famous festivals and events

Event-based tourism in the world is developing very rapidly. After all, it gives an opportunity not only to have a good rest, but also to become an integral part of something grand and big. Unusual event tours are able to give a whole bouquet of bright and unforgettable emotions to a person.

Perhaps the most famous carnivals in the world are the Venetian and the Brazilian. They amaze guests with their scale and duration. For several weeks, two cities - Venice and Rio de Janeiro - in fact, turn into huge festival grounds.

Thousands of fans of flora every September come to Amsterdam, to the annual Flower Parade, and also to Japan to witness the Bonsai Festival with their own eyes. Admirers of alcoholic beverages can be seen at the Oktoberfest in Germany or at a wine festival in Moldova.

There are sports, as well as musical events (the most popular ones are the annual contest of the popular song "Eurovision", the Salzburg Music Festival, the jazz festival in Montreux and others). And cities such as Milan or Paris, like a magnet attracts people who are seriously watching the latest fashion trends.

Brazilian Carnival: grandiose and colorful

The carnival in Rio de Janeiro (as well as in other cities of Brazil) is held annually. In its essence, it is a kind of analogue of the Russian Carnival, marking the beginning of the Great Lent. In this way, the Brazilians say goodbye to "meat pleasures" for forty days. Carnival has long been the most important public holiday in this Latin American country.

This celebration was "brought" to Brazil by the Portuguese in the XVII century. In the following centuries, the carnival changed under the cultural influence of other countries - primarily France and Italy. In the XIX century the carnival in Brazil was enriched with various masks, colorful costumes, as well as some colorful characters that have survived to this day.

Oktoberfest: cheerful and intoxicating

Oktoberfest is a large beer festival, which is held annually in Munich. The festival lasts about two weeks. During this time, its participants, coming from all over the world, drink up to six million liters of beer!

In general, Oktoberfest in Munich annually attend about 6 million tourists. The total monetary turnover of the holiday is approximately 450 million euros. Throughout the festival, more than a hundred medical workers are working on the festival's territory, whose task is to bring to the feelings of too zealous "beer tourists".

Event-tourism in Russia and its development

How much is event tourism in Russia? To date, our country can offer foreign tourists a few high-quality and interesting events and events. Among them:

  • "The Golden Mask" (theater festival).
  • International Festival of Arts in Kaliningrad.
  • Victory Day on Borodino.
  • Festival "Kinotavr" in Sochi.
  • Holiday of the summer Issyk in Yakutia and others.

By diversity, the Russian market of event-based tourism is in no way inferior to the foreign one. However, it loses significantly in terms of financing, scale and level of training.

It is very important to realize that event-tourism can become an inexhaustible source of income for a particular city or region of Russia. For example, in Tobolsk alone, about 20 different events are held every year, which each year replenish the city's budget by approximately 50 million rubles.

Of course, the country's poorly developed infrastructure (bad roads, lack of a good number of good hotels, etc.) is a big deterrent in the development of event tourism in Russia. Quite often sticks in the wheel puts this kind of tourism and passivity of officials, reluctance to take part in the preparation for this or that event.

Finally...

Event tourism is a branch of the tourism industry, which is actively developing in the 21st century. These are numerous trips to visit certain events, festivals, sports or music events.

The most visited and popular world events are the Olympic Games, carnivals in Venice and Rio de Janeiro, Oktoberfest, Formula-1, Eurovision car racing, the Middle Ages festival in Sedan and others.

The Russian market of event tourism is also actively developing, but it is still significantly inferior to the foreign market. All events in Russia are losing to the foreign both in scale and in terms of funding.
