Entomologist - who is this? What is the interest of the entomologist's profession?

Most of us do not like to contact with all sorts of insects and parasites, and some come in horror from just one kind of insect. But there are also those for whom to deal with beetles, mites, scorpions and other such living creatures is part of their professional duties. Such people are called entomologists. Let's see: entomologist - who it is, what it does and what is interesting in its activities.

The fact is that the main object of research entomologists in many causes fear, disgust, etc. What the people engaged in the profession entomologist requires from a person the presence of special personal qualities: observation, activity and true enthusiasm for his work.

  • Be ready to work in uncomfortable conditions;
  • Have versatile knowledge in the rest of zoology.

History of the origin of entomology

Nowadays such a profession as an entomologist is quite well known. Who and what he does, even schoolchildren can say. But there were times when there was no concept of entomology at all.

Information about the first scientific research in this area is dated to the 16th century, but until the 18th century they were superficial. Then the scientists-entomologists were engaged only in descriptive works. Scientific works of those times consist mainly of assessments of the appearance and parameters of the skeleton of insects. The papyrus of Ancient Egypt contains the characteristics of locusts, which devastated the fields. In Chinese manuscripts, there are instructions on breeding silkworms and recommendations for combating pests of fruit trees. This can be called the first essays of entomology science.

Later, the main task, on which the scientist entomologist worked, was the study of living tissues and insect organs. Such studies were possible due to the parallel development of the science of histology and the use of microscopes and other instruments that assist in experiments.

Many of the well-known biologists were also entomologists. For example, Charles Darwin, Carl Frisch, Edward Wilson. Known also is the fact that the famous Russian fictional writer Vladimir Nabokov was also fond of this science. He was called the most famous writer among entomologists. Most of all Nabokov interested in butterflies. About them he repeatedly mentioned in his works.

What does an entomologist in our time

I wonder what are the duties of people in this profession? When asked: "An entomologist - who is this?", The image of an "artisan" researcher, armed with a magnifying glass, a net, a pin and a glass jar, emerges in our memory. Yes indeed, work in the bosom of nature - one of the duties of representatives of the profession. It implies the study of various species, their classification and systematization.

The main duties of entomologists:

  • Collection of material, which most often act as living insects.
  • Observation of their vital activity in their natural habitat.
  • Detection of new, unexplored species of insects.
  • Collecting.

Many modern entomologists spend most of the time doing laboratory research on insects.

Applied entomology. Its utility for society

So it became clear what the entomologist does. But we also need to understand that entomology gives not only theoretical knowledge. Breeding insects in laboratory conditions is most often done for agricultural purposes, where arthropods act as a bird food or as an instrument in the fight against certain species of weeds.

The labor of the entomologist is very important for each of us. The damage inflicted by insects to our home and health can be minimized precisely thanks to the work of the specialists of this profession. We, of course, are accustomed to fighting insects independently in our homes, if the problem has not taken on a global scale, but in the West they act differently. Specialized firms that help to deal professionally with harmful arthropods are very common there. When buying new housing, it is considered necessary to appeal to entomologists, so that they conduct an analysis of the site for settlement of pests, develop a plan for combating them, recommend the necessary preparations.

In conclusion…

So we found out what an entomologist is for the profession, who it is and what it does. From all of the above, it can be concluded that the entomologist is a rather specific type of activity that not everyone will approach. If you feel at least the slightest fear or aversion to a variety of insects, you are unlikely to achieve success in this work.
