Elodea Canadian - properties, content, reproduction

Elodea Canadian is widely known as the "water plague." This name was assigned to the plant due to its ability to extremely rapid reproduction and growth.

Appearance

Elodea in the aquarium looks pretty attractive. The plant has thin long stems with bright curly leaves a few centimeters long. The leaves of the Elodea form dense inflorescences in the form of rosettes.

The most bright light green pigmentation is characterized by young shoots. Accordingly, the old foliage has a darker color.

With regard to the length of the stem, the Elodea they reach an impressive size. Best of all, the Canadian Elodie grows in high volume aquariums. If there is enough free space and most favorable conditions, the plant can fill the entire artificial pond. It is possible to fight the problem by replanting old shoots and cutting them.

Conditions of detention

Elodea Canadian feels equally comfortable both in water at room temperature and in cold aquariums. However, it quickly dies in tropical ponds. Recommended for the content of the plant is the temperature of 20 to 25 o C.

If we talk about the indicators of the rigidity of the aquatic environment, then for elodei the criterion has absolutely no significance. This moment becomes significant only when the plant is transplanted from soft water into a harder one. At the same time, the stems of the Elodea lose their dense structure literally before their eyes, after which they gradually dissolve.

The design of the aquarium for elodey content should allow for the creation of maximum bright lighting. Use as a source of light can be daylight and conventional incandescent lamps. Orientation when determining sufficient light is recommended for the location of the aquarium and the needs of other plants.

For reproduction and active growth, the Elodea Canadian requires natural light. In natural conditions during the winter off-season the plant sinks to the bottom, retaining growth buds. The impact of direct sunlight again brings the élodea to life and rapid expansion.

Properties

The Canadian Elodea acts as a powerful natural filter of reservoirs. Particles of turbidity and pollution, which are formed in the aquarium as a result of the vital activity of its inhabitants, gather on the sheets of the plant. Therefore, due to the growth of the Elodea, it is possible to achieve mirror purity of water.

Absorbing nutrients contained in the thickness of the aquarium water, Elodea produces in significant quantities components with bactericidal properties. The presence of this property contributes to the active destruction of blue-green microscopic algae that pollute and color the water.

Thick, dense thickets of Elodea are ideal for spawning small fishes, especially for viviparous organisms. Between the interweaving of the stems and leaves of the plant, not only the newly introduced fry, but also the grown-up fish, are able to find protection.

How to propagate Elodie Canadian

Reproduction of the Canadian Elodea occurs by cuttings. The length of the cuttings when planting individual stems of the plant should be about 20 cm. Only in this case the elodey can adapt almost instantly to a new place and conditions of detention.

When separating the cuttings of elodea in a substantial amount produces poisonous juice. To prevent the death of the inhabitants of the aquarium when the plant reproduces by artificial means allows its transplantation into a separate container. Among other things, the juice of the Elodea does not have a very favorable effect on the ability to live other aquatic plants.

Finally

Perhaps all of the above will be enough for those who choose the design of the aquarium in terms of growing elodei. Add only that the above recommendations refer to the content of the main species - the Canadian Elodea. Meet in the aquariums can other varieties of plants that need to create other, specific conditions.
