Dudergofsky Canal - a promising waterway

St. Petersburg is a city of canals, bridges and rivers. And each of these objects has its purpose, its history and its secrets.

Where is the Duderhof channel? It flows in the Krasnoselsky district of the Northern capital. He received his name from the river of the same name of Dudergofka, which ran here until the middle of the twentieth century. During the construction of the canal, water was diverted from several flowing reservoirs in the area and the Dudergofka bed was changed, straightening it and dressing it in granite. Thus, the geography and topography of the area was radically changed. In the upper reaches of Dudergofka and now flows through Mozhaysky village, Krasnoe Selo, Ligovo, Gorelovo, until it flows into the Duderhof Canal.

The channel of the water artery

The path of this waterway is rather tortuous. The Duderhof channel takes its origin from the pond located at the intersection of Peterhof highway with Marshal Zhukov street. When reclamation work was carried out to lay the canal, the channels of many small streams were laid along buried channels under the ground. So, the river Dachnaya was taken to Krasnen'ka, and the creeks Ivanovka, Dudergofka and Novaya were taken to the Dudergofsky canal under construction. Were built up dams in the upper reaches of some rivers or collectors, directing water under the ground for others.

Along the whole canal a shaft was poured, which protects when the water rises. The banks of the canal, for the most part, were dressed in granite in the best traditions of the Northern capital. In some areas they are reinforced with reinforced concrete walls or earthen slopes. And in the area where the canal enters the Gulf of Finland, they are not strengthened at all.

Stages of development

In the 60s of the last century, more active construction began in the Gulf of Finland. But its banks had a very large divergence in height, so the authorities decided to align them. On the southern shore, the territory was raised from the Peterhof highway to the coast. For this, it was necessary to make bends of numerous streams, directing their water to the sea. The ideal solution was the construction of the Duderhof Canal.

Conditionally the channel of this man-made reservoir can be divided into three sectors. The first is latitudinal, 2.5 kilometers long and 30 meters wide. The second sector, meridian, is located almost perpendicular to the first. Its length is 850 meters, it runs along the South-Primorsky Park. And the third section of the canal is 1.5 km long - from the Matisov Canal to the Neva Bay.

Bridges and piers

The banks of the canal are very picturesque. For the convenience of residents of the surrounding areas, they are equipped with descents and piers. For the townspeople, this is a favorite place for walking by the water. Through the canal (total length 4.87 kilometers) six bridges are laid, which connect both parts of the city.

In the upper course, just beyond the pond, there is a dam bridge. It serves to regulate the water level in the canal and in the pond. Downstream there is a cable-stayed bridge, which is located at the Walk of Fame. In these places there were fierce battles during the war, so many objects here bear the names of heroes or associated with military actions. They keep the memory of the feat of the people who did not allow the enemy to Leningrad.

Another bridge across the Dudergofsky canal is named after German partisan. Two more bridges are called the First and Second Peterhof. Just one year ago, another facility was opened, connecting two banks in the area of the Heroes Avenue. It was named after the hero of Russia Akhmad Kadyrov.

New bridge

The bridge in the Prospect Heroes area was built in record time, three years ahead of schedule. The grand opening and launch of the first car flow took place on May 1, 2016. Its length is 122 meters, width is 40 meters. In essence, it represents two bridges, united into one. Four auto-roads lead to each side. This bridge greatly simplified the transport situation in the micro district "Baltic Pearl". Residents of this part of the northern capital are now much quicker to get to another part of the city for work or other business. The bridge across the Dudergofsky canal is very much in demand and we expect.

There was a lot of controversy around the name of this object. Local residents went to rallies, protesting against the appropriation of the bridge named after Akhmad Kadyrov, the former president of Chechnya. But the city authorities through secret voting approved this name.

Future plans

This area of the city is actively built up. The Duderhof channel, whose development perspective is quite extensive, attracts investors and businessmen. In this area, a lot of houses, schools, other social infrastructure are being built. Roads and bridges are being built. In the lower part the canal is navigable, which expands its operation possibilities.

The Duderhof Canal is a water artery, which gave rise to the construction of a whole district of St. Petersburg. For decades, there is active construction here, and the number of residents of the district is increasing day by day. Convenient transport links with other areas increase the attractiveness of this part of the city.
