Montenegro, the island of St. Nicholas: description, beaches

The waters of a small Adriatic Sea are washed by several countries: Slovenia, Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Italy, Croatia and Montenegro, but only in the latter is the largest and one of the most beautiful in the world island - St. Nicholas, or St. Nicholas, or Hawaii. It is loved by Montenegrins, inveterate tourists try to get here, photographers from the opening views enthusiastically. Perfectly transparent, turquoise shade of the sea, dense forests and beautiful beaches - all this explains the universal love for Sveti Nikoli.

A little about the life of the island

It has a natural origin, that is, it was formed naturally. The island of St. Nicholas is located in the Budva Bay. Opposite him is the city of Budva. With him the island is connected by a path - a shallow mound. At low tide, the depth here is only 0.5 m. There is a legend about the formation of this "way": when Saint Sava gathered in Athos, a violent storm began, due to which he could not get to his ship and sail. Then he took some stones and threw them into the sea. A path appeared along which Saint Sava could approach the ship. And it happened in 1234.

Located in the Republic of Montenegro, the island of St. Nicholas has an unusual shape. On the one hand, its coastline is stretched at an angle of 45 degrees and protrudes into the sea. The area of the island is 36 hectares, length - about 2 km.

At the moment, people do not live here. Perhaps the government will never allow this. The island is conditionally divided into 2 parts: one is open to tourists, and the second is a reserved area, and the entrance is closed. Maybe this is good, because the nature there is preserved in its original form. There are many different animals and birds on the island. Here live rabbits, deer, pheasants and (do not believe it!) Mouflons - representatives of the genus of rams.

Montenegro, the island of St. Nicholas: attractions

Even on such a small part of the islet, which "gave" to holidaymakers, you can find architectural monuments that are worth a visit. The main architectural sight of the islet is the church of St. Nicholas, the patron saint of seamen. The first mention of it dates back to the 16th century. It was this structure that gave the name to the whole island.

However, the legend says that the temple was built at the end of the XI century by the crusaders led by Raymond of Toulouse, when they went to Constantinople. In the Middle Ages, as is known, the plague swallowed up half of Europe. The pandemic and crusaders could not be avoided - many of them died on the island of St. Nicholas, and the survivors created a cemetery and buried the knights. A nearby built a church, which was destroyed at the time of the 1979 earthquake. In its place was built a new church of St. Nicholas. Also on the island there are several more buildings, but they do not represent historical or architectural value - these are relatively new buildings.

Beaches of St. Nicholas Island

The pearl of such a republic as Montenegro, the island of St. Nicholas, has a coastline length of about 800 m. It is divided into 3 parts. The first, as already mentioned, is a reserved zone, the second is strewn with pebbles, and the third - with sand.

Many are interested in Hawaii-beach (Montenegro). Where did this unusual name come from? But everything is simple: this small part of the coastline is so nicknamed because there is a restaurant of the same name.

Beaches of the island are not crowded, but still some of them are frequented, and others are ideal for those who crave solitude. Often here come the inhabitants of Budva, to rest from the crowds of tourists and cook their favorite rostile. Rocks, transparent turquoise water, dark green fragrant vegetation and silence - what else is needed for happiness?

It should be noted that the pebble beach here is "hard". First the pebbles are small, then they become bigger and sharper. It is necessary to be as cautious as possible so as not to get injured and not to tuck yourself in the foot. Also it is necessary to buy comfortable shoes. This can be done on the Slavic beach of Budva, before buying a ticket for the boat, which will take you to your destination.

Infrastructure of the island

One of the well-developed in terms of tourism republics is Montenegro. The island of St. Nicholas, of course, is also equipped, so vacationers here will find everything they need. Spending time in the fresh air, tourists enjoy the rest. At the same time, a good appetite awakens, you can satisfy your hunger in a restaurant. It is located near the beach.

You can also rent an umbrella and a sunbed. The rental is located on the beach. Such a set will cost about 5 euros. But many people with a view to saving take a mat or a simple towel and sunbathe on it. Yes, and products with water are also advised to buy somewhere in Budva, because the prices in the restaurant "bite."

St. Nicholas Island (Montenegro): how to get there?

With this, there just will not be any problems. Schedules from the Slavic beach are sent by boats, which deliver tourists to the island. They work from 8 am to 6 pm. The ticket costs about 3 euros. Perhaps, it is necessary to call a water taxi, which costs 5-7 times more. Therefore, it is advisable to take with you more money.

You can get to the island all year round.

Reviews of tourists about the island of Sveti Nikoli

Tourists who came to the island say that you can get a lot of pleasant impressions here. And even a pebble beach with sharp stones will not spoil the mood, on the contrary, these "boulders" complement the unreal beauty of the landscape, adding to it the savagery and naturalness in the truest sense of the word. Others believe that it is not necessary to sail on an island. And why, if thanks to a small distance it is perfectly visible from Budva? But one thing to see from afar, and another - to visit, so to speak, in the thick of events. If you go to rest, it's better not to save, so you do not regret it later.

The city of Budva is also beautiful, but it is always crowded, tourists rest here all year round. And sometimes bored pandemonium, I want to be alone with nature and admire the beautiful scenery. It is with such a mood you need to go to the island of St. Nicholas!
