Distance between cars according to traffic regulations: we provide safety

Drivers, especially in big cities, are always somewhere in a hurry, "clutching" ahead cars. And now, when someone else gets into an accident, he realizes that to avoid this situation he would have been only a few centimeters and should not forget what a safe distance between cars is under traffic rules.

The main thing is to observe the speed

In order not to fall accidentally into an accident due to the fact that the permissible distance between cars was violated, the traffic rules clearly limit the maximum speed of movement in different zones.

For example, in all yards and in those places that fall under the sign of 5.21 "Residential zone", the maximum speed limit of 20 kilometers per hour is set.

On city roads, the maximum speed is set by default, but in some areas it is even lower. The inspectors note that if all drivers complied with the speed regime in the city, then the accident would be half as much.

Also, the driver is prohibited from deliberately choosing too low a speed of movement and braking. If this is not observed, inspectors may regard these actions as deliberately creating a hindrance to other moving vehicles.

Required distance and stopping distance

Ideally, the distance between cars according to the SDA is equal to the speed of the car, divided into two. For example, if the driver moves quickly (100 km / h), then the distance between the vehicle ahead should be at least 50 meters. We also allow the option when the distance between cars is equal to the speed of movement of the vehicle.

To understand how important it is to maintain distance, there is a visual table, which shows the braking distance of a moving machine at various speeds.

Stopping time depending on the road surface

Having studied the safe braking let the vehicle on one or another cover it is already possible to understand that a safe distance between cars under the traffic rules when stopping is necessary. However, not all drivers, let alone beginners, will be able to calculate the correct distance to the vehicle ahead to protect themselves and other vehicles.

It is considered that on a dry road or on the asphalt after the rain, the safe distance between cars under the traffic rules should be at least 2 seconds. If the asphalt is dirty and there is a lot of clay or dust on it, then the distance should correspond to 3 seconds. In case the snow is rolled up, the distance will approach in 3 seconds, however, experienced drivers advise beginners to maintain a long distance. If on the roads it snowed with rain and all the precipitation per night froze, then the safest distance will be a minimum of 5 seconds.

Also, all drivers should remember that if necessary, the distance between the vehicles should be increased and careful. This is especially important if the tires on the car do not match the season.

Tips from experts

Of course, even the SDA will not help to determine the exact safe distance. The distance between cars during driving must be constantly monitored by the driver. However, the DPS inspectors give some advice to beginners in order to protect them as much as possible from a possible collision.

  1. If the car moves through the territory with limited visibility, then in this case the distance must be increased at least twice from the put. It is then that the driver will feel as safe as possible, even if the car in front stops abruptly.
  2. If the driver moves on a loaded vehicle, then the distance must be increased by a factor of 1.5, since the braking distance of the vehicle due to weight will increase.
  3. Before the turn, in no case can not be seriously braked. The speed should be reset smoothly, and making sure that those cars that are traveling behind are at a safe distance.

The choice is the effective distance

The effective distance is the same safe distance between cars. SDA states that the effective distance should be increased if:

  • At the wheel there is a driver who recently graduated from a driving school;
  • During the movement along the road, the quality of the road surface gradually began to deteriorate;
  • It started to rain, and then it was replaced by snow;
  • The road survey became worse, or obstacles appeared on the surface;
  • The driver was attached to the end of the car column, and its length exceeds 5 TC;
  • The driver increases the speed - in this case it is better to completely change into a free lane.

Also the driver should remember one more rule that if he is driving a car that is smaller in size and much less massively smaller than its vehicle, then in this case it is necessary to stay away from such a car. The lighter the car, the less it will have the length of the braking distance, and the vehicle following it may simply not have time to stop.

Examples

There are several examples that clearly show the drivers how important the distance between cars is in terms of traffic rules. Examples describe the most frequent causes of collisions.

Example 1

The driver, moving behind, decided to overtake. TS- "leader" decided to turn left. Sharply braking, the driver showed a left turn signal, and the car that was behind did not have time to react to the situation in time. There was a collision.

Example 2

The driver of the "Zhiguli" decided to turn to the left. Behind him was a bus that did not follow the distance. Since the bus is heavier than the "Zhiguli", there was a collision.

Example 3

On the road was traveling TS "Zhiguli". The driver saw the pit and braked sharply, and behind him drove two more waggons. The drivers of heavy trucks did not calculate the safe distance in time and could not react quickly to the braking of the "Zhiguli". As a result, there was an accident with three cars injured.

In fact, there are a lot of such examples, and all these situations could be prevented if all drivers were neat during the movement and kept distance.
