Currency in Moldova: history and description

Currency in Moldova - lei, which consists of one hundred baths. There are denominations of one, five, ten, twenty, fifty, one hundred and two hundred Moldovan lei, as well as coins of one, five, ten and twenty-five baths.

Currency history

For a long time, the national currency was not available in Moldova. The Moldavian principality used mostly foreign coins: florins, ducats, zlotys, etc. And in the 17th century Dutch money with the image of a lion got into the territory of the state. Moldovans called them lei. In the second half of the XIX century the Leu became the national currency of Romania. And in the 90 years of the twentieth century, Moldova, which left the USSR, officially declared them its monetary unit.

Protection

The money of Moldova has the following protective elements:

  1. Watermark of a dark color, which is an image of Stefan cel Mare. The portrait is directed towards the center and can be seen through the skylight.
  2. Protective thread, "sewn" between the "guilloche" in the center and a decorative vertical strip on the left and viewed through the skylight.
  3. The outer edges of the images of the sun on the face of the bill and the crescent - on the back should overlap each other when viewed at the lumen. In addition, the rims of the circles coincide, inside of which are the sun and the month.
  4. The letter V on the "face" of the banknote and the image of the two columns on its back should form the letter M. when looking at the lumen.

Features of the exchange

The currency in Moldova is exchanged without problems. This can be done either in exchangers or in banks. The euro, the dollar, the ruble, etc., are roughly the same everywhere, but there are nuances. In many exchange offices, there is a rule that it operates only if a large amount is changed (equivalent to 100-200 US dollars and more). In other cases, the rate will be too low. This is reported to the client in rules that are intentionally written in very small letters. Therefore, it is more reliable to change the currency in banks, although the rate there is usually somewhat lower.

Cash or non-cash payment?

The calculation with plastic cards is becoming more popular in the country. The cash currency in Moldova is gradually being replaced. But meanwhile still prevail "live" money. You can pay with a card in new supermarkets, large hotels and shopping centers, in some prestigious restaurants and hotels of the capital.

Currency of Transnistria

Monetary unit of the Dnieper People's Republic is the Transnistrian ruble, which consists of one hundred kopecks. This currency is not convertible, it does not go outside the NDP. It is possible to exchange foreign money on the territory of Transnistria, but it is difficult. The rate is constantly changing in connection with inflation. Cashless settlement is practically impossible here, and the system of nominal value of banknotes is extremely confusing.
