The official symbols of this settlement appeared less than twenty years ago. Thus, the Izhevsk coat of arms was established and approved in 1997 by the decision of the City Duma. The authors of the project are Sergey Bekhterev and Nikolai Bykov.

The present emblem did not immediately become the official symbol of Izhevsk. Many artists offered their works for participation in the contest. In the center of the emblem was the famous Izhevsk plant. Other options were often too complicated, overloaded with elements and ornaments.

The original version of the modern coat of arms has survived to this day. It is in the archives of the city Administration.
