Chimney installation: rules and advice

Today almost every private house is equipped with a chimney. And in most cases it is of practical importance, rather than purely decorative. This is due to the fact that private houses are very rarely connected to central heating, they are heated with the help of boilers, ovens, etc. And the chimney in this whole thing plays a very important role. Through it, steam and smoke are released. It helps to function correctly for any heating system. The installation of a chimney is a very complicated and painstaking process.

Introduction

The chimney is a complex design, the purpose of which is the removal of the by-products from the furnace to the atmosphere, which protects the house from dampness, burning, tar and burnt walls. It is an integral part of almost every country house or villa.

The principle of this design is its ability to create natural traction, which also removes steam, tar, etc. The installation of a chimney is a very significant process. If you make mistakes during its construction, you can not get the desired result and earn many problems. As an example, it is possible to cite an insufficiently powerful pull for a certain type of furnace, which is fraught with carbon monoxide poisoning.

There are many different configurations of chimneys, which differ both in their installation price, and in traction and other characteristics. Each of them has its own disadvantages and advantages. Let's talk about what the various types of chimneys are, what tools they need to install, and how to install them properly.

Tools

We will list the minimum of tools that will be needed for the installation of the chimney. This set may vary depending on what kind of system you install. So, let's get started. You need to prepare the following tools:

  • Bulgarian (to her - a set of disks for working on stone and metal).
  • Grinder.
  • A hammer.
  • Perforator with a set of drills of different diameters.
  • Building level (for convenience it is better to have big and small).
  • Bucket, trowel, gon, roulette - small accessories that will simplify the work.
  • If possible, purchase a mounting gun.

Now you can start work. Installation of a chimney or its erection does not seem so difficult if you have a head on your shoulders and hard-working hands.

Materials

To date, there are many different types of chimneys, which are constructed from different materials. Depending on the type of construction, a certain set of materials is bought. So, for example, installation of a sandwich-chimney implies the use of such components in the work:

  • Pipes of different diameters that are inserted into each other;
  • Filler (insulation material) with operating temperature up to 700 degrees Celsius - this is what is between the pipes;
  • Fasteners for pipes;
  • Metal screws;
  • Clamps and brackets;
  • Pipe bends - necessary for pipe bends, etc.

For the laying of a traditional brick chimney, we need cement, a special refractory brick, an umbrella to cover the pipe, and so on. And here we can already see how much the consumables for this or that design differ. Thus, having determined the type of chimney, we begin to search and purchase everything necessary for its installation.

Requirements for a modern chimney

Any modern chimney, whether it's sandwich or brick, must meet a certain set of requirements and safety rules. What are these requirements?

  • It must be resistant to moisture. The process of condensation leads to the fact that the walls of chimneys, both brick and metal, are capable of self-destruct.
  • Possess powerful traction.
  • A good chimney can withstand temperatures of up to 1000 degrees Celsius.
  • He must have excellent resistance to chemicals.
  • Smooth inner surface (it will be much easier to clean such a structure).

Observing the rules for installing the chimney, you can achieve good results and build a really good, high-quality system for the withdrawal of combustion products.

The main varieties

There are many different classifications of chimneys, but today we will talk about such types as:

  • The chimney is made of bricks.
  • Chimney-sandwich.
  • Coaxial structures.
  • Gas heat sink as a kind of chimney.

We will speak about them, as they are the most popular among summer residents and owners of country houses. It is worth noting that each of the species has its advantages and disadvantages, so that you will be the one to choose which one is right for you.

Chimney made of bricks

Installing a chimney from a brick, or rather building it from the base to the peak, is a fairly complex process, involving many stages and rules that must be known and observed. Let's start with the fact that one such design is designed for a maximum of two furnaces, provided that they are located on the same floor.

The rules for installing a chimney are of great importance in this case. In part, they relate to masonry. Each brick should overlap the joint below lying - this will avoid self-destruction. It is believed that the construction constructed by this method is much stronger than any other.

The temperature at the bottom of the stove is staggering. Especially if the house is heated by coal. To avoid damage to the base of the pipe, a special stainless steel nozzle is placed on the furnace, which is then covered with a double layer of bricks. The size of this design depends on the height of the ceilings and the oven itself. For masonry it is necessary to use only clay mortar with the addition of cement. It is very important to make a special valve, which will cover the whole hole - it will serve as a regulator of increasing or reducing the thrust.

It is also permitted to build chimneys inside external walls, with one, of course, the condition: if they are made of non-combustible materials. Recently, most such systems are made on the basis of a steel pipe, which is subsequently isolated and bricked.

Chimney installation: sandwich technology

Sandwich technology is a complex and expensive design, which is capable of withstanding high temperatures in brick. The huge advantage of this chimney is that it practically does not need to be serviced. The only thing that is necessary is to periodically clean it.

The chimney-sandwich consists of three basic elements. First, the inner and outer pipes that are inserted into each other. The seams of each of them must be thoroughly welded and wrapped with a protective fire-resistant cloth or fiber. The gap between the pipes is filled with a special fire-resistant and heat-resistant material, which does not allow the outer tube to become very hot. This is the third element.

Installation of a sandwich chimney will take a lot of time and effort, but it's worth it. The final stage of the work is to fix the structure on the outer part of the wall of the house. This process is carried out by means of special clamps, fasteners and brackets.

Coaxial chimney

Installation of a coaxial chimney is most often carried out on steam generators, gas boilers, etc. This technology is somewhat similar to a sandwich, but instead of a sealer, spacers are simply installed that do not allow the pipes to touch. Such a system, unlike other varieties, can be displayed horizontally through an external wall. Installation of chimneys for gas boilers is very popular today, and coaxial view is the most used.

You ask: "Why they are installed only on gas boilers and generators?" The answer is obvious. The thing is that the temperature in such boilers at the output is much less than in real furnaces. That's why this species is not used anywhere else. Installation of a gas chimney is analogous to the installation of a sandwich type system.

Modular ceramic chimney

To date, modular ceramic chimneys are in great demand, despite their sky-high prices. This is due to the fact that such obstructions carry two key qualities that are very important for a person - they are very simple to install and reliable enough. Such chimneys can be laid even inside wooden walls, you only need to observe the gap between the wall and the ceramic - 5 cm. In addition, they have a very attractive appearance.

Installation of such a chimney is very simple. To do this, it is necessary to connect the ready-made sections of the pipe (modules) among themselves, to fasten well and pour the seams with a special sealing solution, after which the entire structure is fixed on / in the wall.

Chimney for the bath

Almost any owner of a suburban area dreams of having a sauna or a sauna in the house or nearby. The most important element of the latter is the furnace. After all, it creates high temperatures in the steam room. And this requires a high-quality installation of the furnace and chimney, which will work, so to speak, in tandem. It is best for such a business to use traditional brick structures.

We already considered the rules for installing such a chimney above. So there should not be any special questions. As for everything else, the installation of a chimney in a bath is possible both inside and outside the room. Decide, as always, you. But experienced experts advise to disable the design inside. The walls of the chimney are very hot, they can raise the temperature in the room. However, if you are not confident in your abilities, it is best to entrust such work to professionals who will do everything qualitatively and quickly.

Problems when installing chimneys

The installation of the chimney pipe can be accompanied by a lot of problems, and the incorrectly constructed system will simply bring to nothing all the efforts and add to the headache. Difficulties can arise different. One of the reasons may be incorrectly selected material. For example, if you put a bad brick at the base of the oven, you can stay without a chimney, as it will quickly crack and crumble. In addition, it is necessary to know the design features of such a system to prevent the extinction of traction. For example, the height of the pipe above the adjacent part of the roof should be at least 0.5 m, and for houses with a combined roof (flat) - at least 2.0 m. And one more important point. The mouth of brick channels to a height of 0.2 m should be protected from atmospheric precipitation by a layer of cement mortar or a cap made of roofing or galvanized steel.

Of course, it is best to learn from other people's mistakes, so as not to make your own. A miss in this case is fraught with major trouble. An incorrect chimney can destroy all your habitation. For example, burned walls easily cause a fire. Therefore, before you start something, you need to carefully plan and think it through. Consult with knowledgeable people, read the special literature, eventually be reinsured and entrust the work on installing such important systems to professionals. From this and the problems will be less, and with the work you can cope faster.
