Causes, symptoms and treatment of chronic cervicitis

Unfortunately, cases of chronic cervicitis are not uncommon in modern gynecological practice. This is an insidious disease, which often proceeds almost without symptoms, but at the same time it affects the work of the reproductive system and often leads to the development of infertility.

The main causes of chronic cervicitis

Cervicitis - inflammation of the mucous membrane of the cervix. In most cases, the inflammatory process is caused by the activity of bacterial microflora. Less often the cause of the disease are fungal organisms and viruses.

Immediately it is worth noting that cervicitis can be one of the complications of a particular sexually transmitted disease, therefore, risk factors include, first and foremost, promiscuity and frequent change of partners.

In addition, inflammation often occurs against the background of a weakened immune system. Mechanical injuries of the cervix, including those caused by gynecological procedures, can also cause chronic cervicitis. Use of intrauterine spirals increases the risk of mucous membrane damage. In some cases, cervicitis occurs as a result of exposure to certain chemicals, for example spermatocytes, which are contained in certain contraceptives.

The main symptoms of chronic cervicitis

Unfortunately, this disease is not always accompanied by noticeable symptoms. Nevertheless, most women notice uncharacteristic meager discharges of white, sometimes with impurities of pus. From time to time there are pains in the lower abdomen, which, however, quickly disappear. Symptoms include bloody discharge after sexual intercourse. Much less common are pain when urinating.

In fact, it is extremely important to undergo scheduled gynecological examinations in time, as this is often the only way to determine the presence of the disease in the early stages. Chronic active cervicitis leads to densification of the tissues of the uterine wall. In addition, the inflammatory process can spread to other organs of the reproductive system, causing certain lesions of the uterus and ovaries. Progression of the disease affects the reproductive function - often its result is infertility.

Treatment of chronic cervicitis

Undoubtedly, with the slightest suspicion of inflammation, you need to contact a gynecologist. Only a doctor can diagnose "chronic cervicitis", and after receiving the results of tests and visual inspection of the cervix (there is swelling and redness of her mucous membrane).

Treatment of a chronic form of the disease is a long process. Quite often, therapy involves taking antibiotics. It is important to determine the type of pathogen, as this helps to choose a really effective medicine.

In addition, the mandatory parts of the treatment are the right diet, additional intake of vitamins and minerals. In turn, immunomodulating drugs help restore the immune system, which greatly speeds up the recovery process. Physiotherapy is also considered necessary. As a rule, in the case of chronic cervicitis, electrophoresis with the use of special medications is effective.
