The main causes of pain in the collarbone

The body of an adult has 206 bones that form a skeleton. Each of them performs certain functions. Among such a large number of bones should be allocated a clavicle - a pair of tubular bone, which connects the person's hands with the body. It is immediately above the first rib. This double curve bone acts as an arrow, with the blade occupying a position whereby the arm freely moves.

Several important functions are assigned to the collarbone. First, it transmits impulses from the hand to the axial skeleton. Secondly, the clavicle protects the cervico-axillary canal. Tubular bone serves as a firm support for the scapula and upper extremities. The maximum length of the collarbone of an adult does not exceed the 16 cm mark. The bone consists of a body and two ends: the sternum and the acromial. The last joint is inactive. The spherical sternum joint includes rib-clavicular ligaments. Five muscles are attached to the tubular bone , among which is the subclavian. It is under this muscle that the subclavian artery, the vein and the whole node of the nerves of the brachial plexus are located. If you look at the clavicle from the physiological point of view, then it is a spacer between the sternum and the shoulder joint. Moreover, the twin tubular bone protects the neurovascular bundle.

As you can see, it's hard to overestimate the importance of the clavicle. Unfortunately, many of us know the pain in the collarbone. The causes that cause painful spasms in the tubular bone are many. Because the clavicle acts as a link between the shoulder joint and the central skeleton, the pain that occurs in the bone region can cause discomfort and a number of discomforts. In many cases, pain in the clavicle is associated with a fracture of the bone itself. A lot of people are injured in the winter, falling on the hard surface with their elbow. Having fallen on a direct hand, almost always there is a fracture of the clavicle. Even unsuccessfully "landing" on the shoulder, there is a high risk of earning a fracture of a pair of tubular bone. Most often injuries of this kind are received by people who are actively involved in sports. However, no one is immune from the usual fall, as a result of which the collarbone will crack or break. The main symptoms in the fracture of the bone curve are swelling, hemorrhage, pain when moving by hand. In case of a fracture, it is possible to damage the joints near the collarbone, tear the skin and the pleura.

There are cases when a mechanical injury traces the displacement of the collarbone joints. In this case, most often there is a dislocation of the sternal and acromial ends. In the first case, the cause is a fall on the shoulder or a targeted blow to the chest area, which causes a forward or backward movement of the sternal end. The main symptom of dislocation is pain in the sternoclavicular joint. There is swelling on the front of the chest. In the case of dislocation of the acromial end, pain in the clavicle is observed when the arm moves in the area of the injury. If you feel, you can find the end of the collarbone, acting as a step. A severe blow to the shoulder can cause a dislocation of the acromial end. Often there is a specific pain in the collarbone, which is caused by squeezing the third and fourth cervical roots. Symptoms are simple: hiccough, pain in the heart, numbness behind the ear, difficulty in swallowing.

Sometimes, they complain of pain in the left collarbone. There is no fundamental difference between the right and left sides of the tubular bone. However, the causes that cause pain are different. If you feel pain under the left collarbone when walking, then most likely you have visited myositis. What is this disease? In simple words, it is an inflammation of skeletal muscles. Myositis makes the muscle tight, keeps in constant tension, resulting in limited movement. There is a disease on the basis of all kinds of infections, with trauma. Frequent muscle cramps can easily lead to myositis. A dangerous disease called osteochondrosis can cause pain in the area of the clavicle. This is especially true of the widely spread cervical osteochondrosis. It's all about the sedentary lifestyle of many people. Office workers are the main risk group.

Whatever it was, you need to respond quickly to pain in the collarbone and seek help from a neurologist or therapist.
