Butter for motorcycle: how to choose?

When the motorcycle season is about to begin, the owners of motor vehicles are already returning to their iron horses, sorting through them, and again they think what kind of oil to put on the motorcycle, how to do it correctly and whether the car is suitable?

Oil for car and motorcycle

Moving from a motorcycle to a car and vice versa, many believe that oil should be used differently in one and the other technique, since it works in it in different ways.

Three oils are used in the car:

  • For the engine;
  • For the gearbox;
  • For the rear axle.

In modern motorcycles on almost all models, all functions lie on a single oil, since both the engine, and gearbox, and the clutch are located in the same block.

They say that in cars, oil serves only as a protective barrier, preventing various mechanical effects. And in motorcycles, in addition, it must cool the motor and prevent thermal failure, because because of the huge speed of rotation, a large amount of energy is produced, causing the strongest heating.

Motorcycle oil

To deal with this, the oil must be adapted to work in extreme conditions. Viscosity here must remain, even if the temperature changes sharply and strongly. The oil must, on the one hand, be light to flow through narrow openings, and on the other - viscous to cover the rapidly moving parts.

Viscosity means the ability to resist dissection and flow. The fluid will be less fluid and more resistant to dissection when the viscosity is high. And vice versa. At lower viscosity, the fluid becomes more fluid and less resistant to dissection.

When the engine is running, its oily parts try to displace the oil due to friction against each other. But if the viscosity of the oil is good enough, then the liquid passes through the holes slowly, and the contacting elements are able to recover.

The instructions to the motorcycle specify the types of oils that are recommended for the engine.

All-season

One of the most popular among them is the SAE 10w40. The oil belongs to all-weather.

10w means a viscosity index at a temperature of -40 degrees Celsius.

40 also means viscosity, but already at a temperature of 100 degrees Celsius.

This oil for motorcycles at low temperatures manifests itself as easily flowing, and at high it has its standard appearance. Its idea is that it should have a low density during a cold start, and after its heating it retains its viscous properties. Before the appearance of this type of engine was always some time in a state of increased wear, so usually one oil was poured for the winter, and another - for the summer.

When operating it is necessary to remember that the oil for a motorcycle manifests itself nonlinearly as it warms up. Usually the producers are silent about this. And yet this is the second most important parameter, which you need to pay attention to after viscosity.

General Tips for Choosing an Oil

Given the vehicle operation manual, engine oil for motorcycles should be chosen primarily with common sense. For example, if normal driving is carried out at a temperature of +35 degrees Celsius, then a more dense 15w15 oil will do. So the engine will be better protected. But in the spring just a good option will be 10w40 (as less dense).

If the viscosity level is small and the motor is heated at a high temperature, the oil is dissected by the engine parts especially easily, and therefore it is subject to rapid wear. In this case, it is necessary to fill the oil level above the recommended level.

Since the power of the engine is not very different when warming up, many riders keep the engine oil even more viscous when operating at high temperatures to save the unit and the gearbox.

And can be, all the same automobile?

The first thing that catches your eye when comparing motor oil and motor oil is the price. Motor oil costs much more than automobile.

On assurance of manufacturers and many owners of vehicles, the motor is damaged by motorcycle aggregates, and the clutch disappears.

But there is another opinion, according to which some conditionally negative impact does happen. But this only applies to the clutch. And all the negative is reduced to the fact that modern oils have very strong cleaning properties, which lead simply to slippage of the clutch. But you can also use less modern oil!

Classification

Oils have a specification. For example, according to the American API classification, as the new products appeared, their indices changed: SA, SB, SC, SD, and so on, in its letter for each generation. Modern automotive oils have already reached the indices of SN, but motor oils have stopped at SH.

If you look at other classifications, you will find an amazing thing: the oil for motorcycles just does not differ from the car!

But why then do we overpay? Maybe it's all about the psychology of buyers and the big costs of manufacturers for smaller packages? It is worth thinking about.
