Azan - what is this? How to read azan

One of the oldest religions is Islam. It is familiar to almost every person: someone professes it, and someone just heard about it. The Ottoman Empire fought to the last drop of blood, not only to increase the territory of the possessions, but also to spread its faith. In the Islamic religion, the word "azan" is a call to prayer. Let's try to understand why Muslims from the very childhood know about the meaning of this word, and how to correctly read the adhan.

The Prophet Muhammad

Despite the fact that there was more than one prophet in the Islamic religion, it is Muhammad who is considered the founder and the last interpreter of Allah's will. According to a legend, one day he gathered his companions for advice, in order to decide how the call for prayer should sound. Each offered his own version, which was similar to the customs of other religions: ringing bells (Christianity), sacrifice, burning (Judaism) and others. On the same night, one Sahaba (Prophet Muhammad's companion) - Abu Muhammad Abdullah - saw in his dream an angel who had taught him to read the adhan properly. It seemed incredible, but other prophet's companions also saw exactly the same dream. It was in this way that it was decided to fulfill the call to prayer.

What is the essence of Islam?

In Arabic, the word Islam means obedience. This is the basis for the whole religion. There are five mandatory prescriptions that must be dutifully performed by a believing Muslim.

  • First of all, these are shahada, which sound like this: I testify that for me there is no other God but Allah, and Muhammad is his prophet.
  • Every day, 5 times necessarily conduct prayer (prayer in Arabic with the implementation of certain regulations).
  • During the month of Ramadan , fasting is mandatory, and the believer does not eat from sunrise to sunset.
  • At least once in life it is necessary to visit the Kaaba in the city of Mecca.
  • And also the last mandatory requirement is a donation to the needy and to the community.

Interestingly, in Islamic countries, religion and the state are very closely related. For example, before every council meeting it is customary to praise Allah. To an unbelieving Muslim (kafir), as a rule, it is very difficult to live among believers, since they can consider him an enemy. If during azan a person does not repeat the words, then they always pay attention to him and look with contempt. The Quran says that people who do not believe in Allah are enemies, and they can not be loved, even if they are relatives. Muslims truly believe that one day a judgment day will come, and everyone will be rewarded according to merit.

The first muezzin

Muezzin is a minister calling people to pray with a minaret (a tower located next to the mosque). After the order of accomplishment of the azan was approved, the Prophet Muhammad ordered one Muslim with a very beautiful voice to learn these rules by heart. This person was called Bilal ibn Rabah, he became the first muezzin in the Islamic religion. In addition, there are reports that Bilal added the words "prayer is better than sleep," in the morning azan, and the prophet Mohammed approved it. Only men can read the call to prayer. In addition, Islamic countries hold contests for the best reading of the azan. It's so beautiful and fascinating that even the gentiles enjoy listening to it.

Basics of reading azan

The unique is the fact that in the Islamic faith even the call to prayer is read according to certain rules and rites that never change. Azan in Israel is read five times a day, at the same time. Also, the muezzin should stand facing the cubic construction (shrine) of the Kaaba, located in the city of Mecca. This is a very important shrine, to which multiple rites, prayers and, of course, the adhan are associated. The text read by a person to the Kaaba is considered sacred.

Also, for example, a Muslim who died, is buried on his right side, facing the shrine, sleep is also recommended in this situation. Reading prayers is also related to this direction, every believer knows approximately exactly where it is located. In addition, the reading azan raises his hands roughly to the level of the head, and his thumbs of both hands touch the ear lobes.

Text of azan

The call to prayer from the Muslim people consists of seven formulas, which should sound obligatory. Nobody ever changes azan. The text sounds like this:

  1. Four times God is glorified: "Allah is above all".
  2. The shahada is twice pronounced: "I testify that there is no deity comparable to the One-Only God."
  3. The shahada about the Prophet Muhammad is twice pronounced: "I testify that Muhammad is the messenger of God."
  4. The appeal itself sounds twice: "Hurry on namaz."
  5. Two times: "Seek salvation."
  6. Twice (if it is the morning prayer) words that Bilal added: "Prayer is better than sleep."
  7. Twice again God is glorified: "Allah is above all".
  8. And once again a testimony of faith: "I testify that there is no deity except Allah!"

How to read and listen to the call to prayer

As it was said before, a man with a very beautiful and sonorous voice should listen to prayer, holding his fingers in the lobes of his ears. Reading azaan is like singing a song, the words are pronounced very clearly and singing, but according to the laws of Islam the call should not be like music. Also, when pronouncing certain phrases, the muezzin turns his head either to the right or to the left. He who hears the same, calming the soul, in turn, should repeat almost all the words he has heard. The exception is the phrase "There is no God except Allah," which is replaced by the expression: "Allah has power and might." And also before the morning prayer, hearing the words: "Prayer is better than sleep," you must answer: "You said what is true and just."

Azan at home

Many of those who become professors of Islam, at a conscious age are interested in the question: Do you need to read the houses of the adhan? This is a prayer for prayer, is there any sense in calling yourself to prayer? Of course, for Christian believers, perhaps the question will seem very strange, but not more than the answer to it. Even if the prayer takes place in a house or a hotel, reading the adhan is necessary. This is practically a component of prayer, without which it is indispensable. In Turkish hotels, each room even indicates the direction of the Kaaba, where you need to turn when reading the azan.

What is adhan for a Muslim in reality?

It would seem that a simple appeal to prayer, like ringing bells in the Orthodox faith, should not cause a special question. But believing Muslims have their own opinion on this score. The Qur'an clearly states that the adhan is the path to Allah's forgiveness and true faith. The power of appeals to prayer is so great that without it, namaz loses its meaning. In addition, in the Islamic faith there is such a thing as sunna - it is the desired duty of every Muslim.

And in the sacred scripture it is said that the azan is the sunna, which opens the way to Paradise. The call to prayer sounds 5 times a day in each mosque, and the believers gladly go to it. They believe that adhan, calming the soul and giving them pacification, will certainly help in their vital affairs and save from hell.

Azan for children

A child born in a Muslim family is also part of this large and lasting religion from the first days. Azan for children is a sacrament similar to baptism in Orthodoxy. It is believed that the first words a newborn should hear is a call to prayer. Of course, for this it is necessary to call a spiritual head. But, despite the fact that the adhan in Israel is a frequent phenomenon, it is quite difficult to perform this ritual immediately after the birth of the baby. Most often, a father calls to him in the ear for a prayer for a newborn. Then, after the mother and child are discharged from the hospital, a spiritual chapter is invited to the house for the ritual.

This tradition, of course, has its own meaning. First and foremost, the child is introduced to Allah from his birth and taught to praise him. In addition, it is believed that the holy words will protect the child from the machinations of Satan (the devil).

Since every Muslim knows how to read azan, it is not difficult to read it to the ear of a son or daughter. Perhaps the Islamic faith is so strong precisely because from the very birth of the child instilled love and the worship of Allah. It is believed that parents are obliged to raise a child in accordance with the laws of the Koran, and a great responsibility always lies with the head of the family - the man. His duties include providing the family and its moral principles.

For a true Muslim, uneducated children or a walking wife are considered shameful. During the Azan the head of the family must go out into the street, repeat the words for the muezzin and go to the prayer. A woman and a child can stay at home and pray there. However, contrary to popular belief, Muslim women and young children are not forbidden to enter the mosque. Most often, it is the morning Azan and Namaz that come to the whole family. And then spend the whole day in a raised spiritual mood.

To summarize, it can be said that the adhan is part of the daily rituals of the Islamic peoples. Allah and the Prophet Muhammad are praised in prayer for prayer, and also testifies that God is only one. Azan sounds five times a day, before every compulsory prayer, and every believer repeats the words of the call to prayer.
