ASUS DSL-N12U - simple and multifunctional ADSL-router

Network equipment, and in particular Wi-Fi-routers, has long since emerged from a series of something special and unique. The router can be found in any slightly modern apartment, the benefit of a gadget is affordable and affordable for everyone. But in most cases these are budgetary and not very modern options. But sometimes I want to squeeze the most out of such a simple device.

ASUS company several years ago introduced one of the most promising lines of Wi-Fi routers in the middle price segment. Putting emphasis on simplicity and stability, Taiwanese engineers have created the most user-friendly device with an extensive set of functions that are not available for other similar gadgets. Actually, about all the possibilities of the router and how to connect it, read below.

Main Features

The ASUS DSL-N12U router is a mid-price device, so it differs from cheaper competitors with a number of features. It is equipped with two external antennas with a gain of 5 isotropic decibels. The signal transmission rate reaches 300 mbps. Due to increased performance, a stable signal and a large coverage area from one device are achieved.

With the release of a modern generation gadget, developers are concerned about creating a more advanced interface for setting up and establishing a connection. Unlike other routers, the configuration is not via the web interface, but with the utility that comes with the device.

The user can create several (up to four) SSID-names, that is, separate Wi-Fi networks. This is useful if you want to create a separate network for guests, a child or office employees, thereby setting speed limits or individual security settings. The WPS function is supported to expand the network in a large room.

An important feature of the gadget is the ability to create a network printer on its basis. The All-In-One Printer Sharing function allows you to connect any USB printer to the router and use it remotely from any computer or mobile device connected to the network.

Connectivity

Before connecting the router, you must change the network settings, namely, set the parameters for obtaining the IP address and DNS server in automatic mode. The telephone cable must be installed in a dedicated splitter (in the LINE socket), and from the DSL connector - directly to the router, to the ADSL port. From the Port Phone cable you need to put it in your home phone. After the connection between the router and the phone is established, you need to use the complete patch cord and connect the computer (Ethernet socket) to the router (LAN1 socket). Before setting up the network, reset the settings to zero. To do this, hold down the Reset button on the back of the ASUS DSL-N12U for 10 seconds.

Network configuration

Despite the availability of software for quick setup, the user still has the right to perform point settings using the web interface. Access can be obtained by going to address 192. 168. 1. 1. (without spaces).

To configure an ADSL connection, you must:

  • Open the WAN section;
  • In the "Protocol" field, specify PPPoE;
  • In the VPI field, specify a value of 1;
  • In the VCI field, specify a value of -50;
  • In the Incapsulation field, specify LLC;
  • In the Username field, you must specify the user name specified in the contract;
  • In the Password field, enter the password specified in the contract;
  • Save the entered data and close the settings.

Create a Wi-Fi network

To configure a Wi-Fi connection on the ASUS DSL-N12U, you need:

  • Go to the Wireless section.
  • In the SSID field, specify the name of the future network (any, to the user's choice).
  • In the Authentication Method field, you must specify a method for encrypting data. The most suitable option is WPA-Personal, as it provides the optimal connection speed and is supported by a large number of devices.
  • In the WPA Encryption field, specify the TKIP.
  • In the WPA Pre-Shared Key field, you must set a password that will protect the network from unauthorized users. The main thing is not to forget it.
  • After that, save the changes and exit.

Configuring the Print Server

To start working with a network printer, you need to configure it on the computer itself. To do this, we connect the printer to the computer, install the drivers and check whether it works. After that, install the set of utilities that come with the router (ASUS Wireless Utilities). Then simply connect the router to the computer, and the printer to the router. The printer appears in the list of network print devices and will be accessible to everyone who is connected to the router.

Firmware Upgrade

The router software plays an important role in its uninterrupted and optimal operation, so you should take care of updating it immediately after the connection. The firmware file can be downloaded on the official website of the manufacturer in the section "Drivers and Utilities".

After the firmware file was on the computer, you must:

  • Go to the settings of the router;
  • Select the section "Administration";
  • Find the field "Firmware Update";
  • Specify the path to the firmware file, wait for the update process to finish, and restart the ASUS DSL-N12U.

User Reviews

The product of the company ASUS proved itself not only in words, but also in practice, which was confirmed by the owners of the device. First of all, users noted quick and easy setup. In most cases, just connect the device and use the bundled software. Of the features not specified by the manufacturer, the owners of the gadget allocated full-fledged support for IPTV and IP-telephony, as well as the ability to work with Smart TV. The device has some problems with the distribution of the load, why it often overheats. This is often complained of by users, but the speed and stability of the connection, this unpleasant fact does not affect. Moreover, most of the problems can be solved by updating the firmware.
