Which is better: IPS or TFT? How to choose a good screen?

Now in the electronics market there is such a huge variety of solutions that some users have difficulty in choosing a device by some parameters. And then the question may arise which is better: IPS or TFT, and what differences are there in these technologies. In the catalogs of technology, namely in the descriptions of displays, you can find a lot of confusing information, which leads to the search for answers.

Technology Features

So, to determine what is better: IPS or TFT, you need to know how both matrices work, that is, what principles are laid in their basis. The first in its essence is a more perfect version of the second, that is, when it was created, a slightly different approach was used.

TFT is a method for producing matrices of liquid crystal screens, in which the arrangement of the crystals along a spiral between a pair of plates is assumed. If no voltage is applied, they rotate horizontally to each other at a right angle. At the maximum voltage they are turned so that the light passing through them forms a black color of the pixels, and when the voltage is absent - white. If we talk about what is better: IPS or TFT, then the first technology differs from the second in that the crystals in such a matrix are not placed spirally, but parallel to the screen plane and relative to each other. When the voltage is not applied, the crystals do not rotate, than this matrix and differs from the previous one.

The difference in terms of the user

So, considering the question, which is better: IPS or TFT, it is worth saying that the visual difference here is in greater contrast, providing an almost perfect black transmission. Thanks to this, the image is very clear. When using a TFT matrix, one can speak of a low quality color rendering. In this case, each pixel has its own shade, which does not coincide with the others. Because of this, colors can be highly distorted. But such a solution also has a considerable advantage, namely the high speed of response in comparison with all existing at the moment. IPS-screen requires a certain time for a full turn of parallel crystals. The human eye thus almost does not catch the difference that exists in the response time.

Important points

Understanding what is better: IPS or TFT-display, it is worth noting that the first option is more energy-intensive. It is conjugated with the need for more energy to turn the crystals. When it comes to the need to ensure maximum energy efficiency, the manufacturer makes its choice in favor of TFT-matrices. However, IPS technology is characterized by very wide viewing angles, which are up to 178 degrees. This ensures maximum usability. All other matrices can not provide such a survey. Currently, TFT is the simplest and cheapest solution used in most models of budget segment devices. In this case, IPS is considered to be attributed to a higher level, but it is impossible to call it top-level, because at the moment there are more advanced developments.

TFT PLS or IPS: which is better?

The first type of matrix is characterized by a short response time and optimal energy intensity, but the color rendering level in this case slightly lags behind other technologies. IPS-matrix provides excellent color transfer, optimal contrast, large viewing angles, but at the same time it is characterized by the high energy consumption required for operation.

Between the screens working on these two technologies, there is simply a huge gap in terms of quality. The same applies to cost. TFT-matrices remain on the market only because they are so cheap.
