What is the BIOS update?

At the words "BIOS update" many PC owners are presented with a service center with dedicated master gurus who know the great secrets of handling microprocessor technology. Of course, in some cases, flashing the flash chip of the basic input-output system (BIOS or BIOS) can not be performed at home. But this is, rather, an exception to the rules, and if you do everything in a thoughtful and unhurried manner, then an independent BIOS update is entirely within the power of any user. Usually enough basic knowledge of how to install programs and work with applications. Why do the forums meet the theme that the BIOS update is a rather complicated process and it is better not to produce it again? There are several reasons for this.

First, there are several ways to update the BIOS, which, although they lead to the same result, however require a different approach to the implementation, sometimes, radically different. That's about them and will be discussed in today's article.

In short, the BIOS is a microprogram contained in a special chip on the motherboard. After turning on the computer, this small program performs testing of all major components and their basic settings. It is an indispensable part of any computing system, in particular because it initiates the boot process from the selected media. In case of an error in the BIOS, the motherboard will not turn on, presenting, in fact, a car without a driver. Therefore, all the boards go on sale with the BIOS already "stitched" (written in the microcircuit). For the end user, a special interest is the possibility of self-reprogramming of the said chip with the purpose of writing an updated version of the firmware to its memory cells. For example, the next update of the GIGABYTE BIOS on the H61M-S2PV card made it possible to more flexibly manage the work of the video core built into the central processor . The introduction of corrective changes to the operation of RAM modules began to be processed correctly. In addition, the UEFI component responsible for interaction with the latest operating system Windows 8 was also seriously improved. Also, on the assurances of developers, the new version of BIOS improves the stability of the computer. One thing is obvious: all these changes are desirable, but without them everything works. Thus, to update the BIOS GIGABYTE or leave everything as is - to solve the user. All that is said fully applies to motherboards of any other manufacturer.

You can update with the help of a special program-broker, designed to work in a Windows environment (Gigabyte boards have "@Bios"); From DOS; Using Q-Flash technology. The first is the simplest.

In any case, first you need to go to the developer's site, choose your model from the list, download a new version of the BIOS file and @Bios program. If the archive is downloaded, then it needs to be unpacked to a folder on the disk or "dropped" on a USB flash drive (for Q-Flash). After installing @Bios, run the application, specify the type of update, the file itself and ... we hope that at that moment the electricity will not disappear. Usually the process takes no more than a minute. After reboot, the board is already with the new BIOS version. Obviously, there are no difficulties.

Q-Flash allows you to reflash the firmware without booting the system. Go to the BIOS settings (button Del), connect the USB flash drive with the file, press F (there are prompts), specify the file and flash it.
