What is elective in school? What is the difference between an elective and an elective?

Modern education provides great opportunities for the younger generation to fully realize their interests. This process became possible when using different forms of education in educational institutions.

What is an elective?

Parents of high school students are often asked this question, because each of them wants to help their child in further education, and for this very often require in-depth knowledge in many subjects, although within the educational standard they should be taught at a basic level.

In translation from English, the meaning of the word "elective" is "selective". That is, if we are inclined to our Russian language, then this is nothing but an opportunity to choose something.

Modern School Opportunities

The modern school is able to offer its students a variety of additional education that goes beyond the GEF. The implementation of this activity is due to the use of:

  • Circle activity at the primary and secondary levels of education;
  • Electives and electives at the higher level of the educational process.

What is elective in school? The answer to this question can serve as the following saying: it is an opportunity to choose the additional education offered to students in a number of subjects without interruption from the main learning process. It is conducted with children, united according to their interests and inclinations.

Purpose for conducting electives

Undoubtedly, the use of any innovation should be justified by the solution of certain tasks and meet the goals set. On the question of what an elective is in the school and what its goals are, one can answer in the following way: it is the choice of students from the list offered by the school by high school students.

Elektiv should:

  • Help to increase their level of knowledge according to career guidance;
  • To fill the gaps in existing knowledge with the aim of successfully passing the exams and obtaining a certificate with the desired grades.

Who leads the electives in the school?

A short-term course in this or that subject is handled by a teacher who has good knowledge in this field. Usually they are subject teachers, which are faced with two tasks:

  • Deepen the knowledge of children in specific fields of science,
  • To enable students to pull up their knowledge of the subject.

What is an elective for a teacher? The teacher, having become responsible for this form of training, must build a process so that, with a minimum of theoretical studies, the student can obtain practical skills in the subject. In other words, using the existing knowledge base of the trainee, the teacher should maximize their limits.

The difference between the elective and the elective

Back in the 90s of the last century, a form of employment was introduced in general education institutions, as an elective. And for today there were electives. Both forms belong to the class of choice of the student.

The question arises: what is the difference between an elective and an elective? In this case it is necessary to start from their definitions. What is an elective? This is an individual form of teaching students, in which the child can choose from the list offered what he is interested in, or at all, not to make a choice. It is not right to force anyone to attend one or another elective to force him.

What is an elective? This is an additional form of individual education, in which the child from the list of subjects offered by the educational institution should make a choice based on his interest. Further the student is obliged to attend all classes and perform the tasks assigned to him. In other words, this type of activity from the moment of choice becomes an integral part of the basic educational process of the student.

What types of elektivov exist?

In school education there are two types of elektiviv. It:

  • Pre-profiling (grades 8-9);
  • Profile content (grades 10-11).

Pre-profile electives are designed to assess the situation of the correctness of the child's choice, the ability to tighten their knowledge in some subjects. Profile elements are aimed at in-depth study of the subject in order to successfully pass the USE.

The concept of interdisciplinary courses

Some schools in our country can offer their additional educational services called "intersubject electives". The purpose of this type of training is the vocational guidance of the child. The educational institution gives an opportunity to try their hand at judging the correctness of the choice made in the field of further professional education. This type of occupation can include the following types of elektivov:

  • Chemical-biological;
  • Socio-economic;
  • Physical and mathematical;
  • Physical and chemical;
  • Information technology;
  • Physico-biological.

Most often these lessons take place at the stage of preprofile preparation of the student. This corresponds to grades 8-9.

In this case, the electives are distributed according to the interests of the trainees. And if there are two or more parallel classes in the school, then the training schedule is drawn up so that all the children who chose this course could attend.

This condition, of course, is a big problem for the person making up the schedule, because you need to consider a number of factors:

  • Employment of the teacher;
  • The absence of windows in the schedule for students;
  • The possibility of children to attend additional education centers, which often begin their work from 15:00.

But nothing is impossible. At the moment there are many schools in Russia that successfully implement the educational process with the inclusion of elective courses.

Parents as participants in the educational process

It would seem that in the educational process there are always two parties involved: a student and a teacher. But parents play an important role. Since the 8th grade very often they try to impose their will on the child, namely, to advise where to go to study. Of course, you do not need to do this. After all, the child is an individual, a person. And if once the parents did not enter the theater school, this should not be done for them by children.

Everyone should be given the right to choose. Moreover, the modern school provides such opportunities for students. What is the elective for parents? This is an opportunity to give the child to assess their strength for further training according to the chosen specialty without additional financial costs.

Using elektivy as a profile education for the child, we can distinguish the following benefits:

  • Do not need to hire a tutor;
  • Classes are held without interruption from the main educational process;
  • The child lives at home with his parents;
  • Classes are conducted by familiar teachers, which allows to preserve the psycho-emotional background of the child.

Afterword

Only with a properly constructed learning process can you create a knowledge base for children that will help them throughout their life. All participants of the educational process need to learn how to correctly use the resources that the state offers.

Not every student heard such a word as "elective". What this means, it is necessary to inform the children in school years, so that it would be easier for them to adapt in adult life. After all, this kind of classes is also planned at the higher education level. In addition, increasingly to improve the skills of employees, employers choose the form of short-term courses called elektivy.

Do not be afraid of new forms of education, you should be afraid of the lack of education of the younger generation! Elektiv - a unique opportunity to identify the talents of the student, his focus in this or that sphere of life. The correct approach of parents and teachers will help educate future professionals in their field.
