What is a flexible screen? Advantages of a phone with a flexible screen

The appearance of a modern mobile phone firmly "sat down" in the minds of most people. If we are asked to imagine a modern device, we are likely to see something like the latest models of Apple or Samsung - a rectangular thin phone with a wide touch screen. If you think about it, it really is. We do not even imagine that the phone can be different. That it can go beyond these rectangular large displays and enclosures, as thin and light as possible. For example, in the minds of developers, ideas have long been emerging that you can release a phone with a flexible screen. To do this, tried a few years ago, and in the battle for such technology Samsung and LG got involved.

What is a flexible screen?

As it becomes clear by the very phrase, flexible is called that screen, which does not have a rigid base, one that can be bent without violating its performance. This means that such a screen can be easily rolled into a tube, or even folded in half. The phone, which will have such flexible led-screens, can be boldly reduced in size, bending in half. For us it is so unusual, given our experience with extremely "hard" touch phones, that, at first glance, it is even difficult to name the first and most obvious advantages that such devices will possess. And they are, and quite thorough.

Advantages of a folding screen

So, the advantages that a flexible screen will have, start to list should be that it is very unusual. No wonder we are accustomed to working exclusively with stiff telephones, because of what to take in hands such a device that can be bent into any direction that suits us is an unusual experience. And it is obvious that this will interest the buyers. In turn, the presentation of such a device could provide a sharp jump in sales volume of the company that will bring such a device first. This explains the fierce struggle waged by LG and Samsung for the leadership in this sector of the market. Representing such a display, you can repeat the success of Apple in the market of touch phones.

Further, it should be noted the expansion of the functionality of the mobile phone, in which there is a flexible screen. After all, it can be added, for example, to make more convenient pictures. Also, with an elastic screen on the phone, you can view pictures and videos under a completely different angle, previously unheard of, bending them, again, at your discretion. The picture on this display, simply put, will be times more realistic and more qualitative than on conventional panels.

Finally, another advantage that display displays can be demonstrated is screen protection. It's no secret that the touch screen is the most vulnerable place not only phones, but also tablets. If a device with such a screen falls, then, with a high probability, its monitor will crack, if not stop working at all. The same applies to cases where, for example, the screen of the iPhone 5S bent in the back pocket of the jeans due to pressure, which constantly acted on the device. If the screen on the phone was flexible, this would not happen.

The first models with a screen that can be bent

If you think that the phones on which there is a real flexible LED screen are just fantasies, then you are mistaken. In fact, in the world were presented at least two devices that can please their owners with such a "chip" as a curving screen. The company Samsung has presented such device, as Galaxy Round, and LG - the model G Flex. Two of these devices were the first in the world with flexible display phones, and introduced them in 2013. The peculiarity of them is that they are curved in the shape of an arc, thus, it is more convenient to work with them (it's easy to reach the curtain with your finger), and video and photo content are much more interesting to watch - all the videos come out "livelier" than on a flat screen. However, despite the debut, the "boom" of sales of these phones did not happen. It is possible that the public simply missed the release of these new products for the reason that phones did not demonstrate any revolutionary changes. Bend the device, giving it an arbitrary outline, because of the hard case and the battery still can not. Here, only a flexible screen can change its shape, but an ordinary user can not do it. As promised in Samsung, for example, they are going to use the technology further, installing the same display on their new advanced model Galaxy S6. Other phone manufacturers are not yet interested in flexible screens.

Prospects and expectations

In fact, one can not reveal all the prospects of flexible displays in one article, since there are a lot of nuances and factors that are difficult to take into account. Manufacturers, promoting such devices, expect first of all an agiotage among fans of gadgets and ordinary users, who are interested in an unusual phone. And users expect that they will be offered not just some new product that does not differ significantly in functionality from other models, but a phone that will be high-quality and inexpensive. Above this, Samsung, LG and others are still working.
