What are the symptoms of Gref in children

It's very hard being a young mother. How to care for a baby, what to feed him, why does he cry? Maybe it's hot for him? Or, conversely, too cold? By what signs do you understand that his tummy hurts?

Every scheduled visit to a doctor causes severe stress. To visit the pediatrician, you can still get used to it, but there is also an oculist, an ENT, a neuropathologist. And they all pour out incomprehensible medical terms. What to do, for example, if the last specialist has diagnosed your child with "symptoms of Gref"? What kind of a disease is this? If you look into the medical encyclopedia, you can find out that this so-called Gref syndrome is inherited and characterized by very serious developmental anomalies, among which doctors call oligophrenia, deafness, deformity of the spine, cataracts and even schizophreniform syndrome. Needless to say, the picture is depressing. However, wait for panic: most likely, the neurologist did not say a word about the syndrome. It is much more likely that he mentioned exactly the symptoms of Gref. In newborns, they are very common.

General Characteristics

The symptoms of Gref (they are also referred to as the poetic name "the symptom of the setting sun") are nothing more than a white strip that remains in the baby between the iris and the upper eyelid, when he looks down. Doctors say that this sign does not indicate the presence of any deviations in the baby. Among the most common reasons that determine its presence, physicians call the features of the anatomical structure of the eye or underdevelopment of the nervous system. In both cases, Gref's symptoms do not require medical intervention. Do not need to stuff the child with pills. Just wait: only after six months the baby's nervous system "ripens", and everything will return to normal.

Possible complications

It should be noted that in some cases Gref's symptom in infants requires specialist control and long-term treatment. Be sure to pay attention to such manifestations as increased excitability, strabismus and tremor. If a child has a habit of constantly tipping his head back, regurgitates a fountain and generally shows some signs of a developmental lag, this may indicate serious problems. It is likely that the baby has increased intracranial pressure or hydrocephalic syndrome. In order to make an accurate diagnosis, you will have to undergo several examinations. Neurologist will write directions for magnetic resonance and computer tomography, neurosonography, electroencephalography. Only after the results are obtained, you can think about the treatment. Depending on the situation, the doctor may prescribe medication or a course of therapeutic massage. Swimming is also very good (of course, it should be under the watchful eye of the instructor). If the dynamics are positive, the baby will quickly recover. If you are not sure that your child really has this problem, look at how the Gref symptom looks like in children - photos can be found in any medical reference book.
