Where did Vorskla (the river) come from?

Its history goes back to the distant past, when the Scythians and Sarmatians lived on the territory of modern Ukraine and Russia. The very name of the river is first encountered in documents dated 1173 year. It is also seen in the Ipatiev Chronicle.

So where did the name of the river Vorskla come from? Versions on this subject are many. One researcher believes that the term "Vorskol" refers to the notion of border fortification, "thief" at that time meant a fence or a fence.

Another variant of hydronemia originates from aorts - representatives of the nationality, which was once part of the Sarmatian tribe. A little later this name was picked up by the Turkic-speaking Kypchaks. The second part of the "count" in Mongolian means "valley" or simply "river". That is why there is an opinion that the name came from the Turks, who at one time inhabited the area next to the river.

There is another legend connected with the origin of the name. The queen was moving on the carriage across the bridge, and at that moment her glasses fell down. She said: "The thief of the warehouse" ("slope" - "glass" in Ukrainian). However, there is no legendary documentary evidence, but this story is often told to locals by tourists.

Below Vorkla, for several tens of kilometers, runs along the sandy shores, the meadows are replaced by a pine forest. Approximately near Oposhni, it comes to a high slope, which is already up to Poltava itself. Before the city on the right bank there is a field of the famous Poltava battle, and on the river itself there is a dam. It will take an update.

In the city you can end the journey or start it on the lower course of the river further. If desired, you can walk around Poltava and see its sights. A kilometer from the station there is another dam. The banks in this area are dry and high, overgrown with willows and savannahs.

Before Sanzhary will be updated the last dam on the recommended site. If you want to continue the journey further, there will be three more in Kobelyaki. But if you plan to finish in Belikov, then there is a railway station nearby, from which you can go to Kharkov and to other cities.
