Vernadsky's Library is the largest storehouse of knowledge of Ukraine

Knowledge does not happen much. This is known not by hearsay, people who at least once visited the National Library named after V.I. Vernadsky in Kiev. It is about this depository of valuable knowledge that I want to tell you now.

About accommodation

First of all, it needs to be clarified that Vernadsky's library is located in Kiev (Ukraine), in Holosiivskyi district. This is not the center of the capital, but its location is more than successful: it costs not far from one of the entrances to Kiev, moreover, the central bus station is located nearby. So, people from all over Ukraine come here to get knowledge. And this is not surprising, because the Vernadsky Library is the largest and most informational rich not only in Ukraine, but even in the world.

You need to look into history a little. It should be said that the National Library of Vernadsky was founded back in 1918. However, it was not until 1988 that she was given the name of Vladimir Ivanovich Vernadsky, a scientist, thinker, a man who was actively engaged in not only scientific but also social activities. Very interesting will be the following facts about this library:

1. This is the main scientific and information center of Ukraine.
2. The Vernadsky Library is among the 20 largest libraries in the world.
3. Since 2008, all periodicals that enter the library are published on its official website.

About the institution

How not to mention that in the library there are more than 40 units that are competently formed?

1. Institutes: the Ukrainian book, library science, biographical studies, manuscripts, etc.
2. Centers: computer technology, conservation and restoration, etc.
3. President's Fund.
4. Center for Information Support of State Authorities.

Almost a thousand employees work in the library itself. Most of them - about 65% - librarians, about 20% - scientific staff, 15% - support staff.

About work

It should be said that the library of Vernadsky conducts book exchange with a huge number of scientific institutions (about 1500), which are located in more than 80 countries. In addition, this well of knowledge is also a depositary of materials and documents of the United Nations in Ukraine. All candidate and doctoral dissertations, which were protected on the territory of the state, are also kept here. As for the property, the library has about 15 million units of storage, which are annually used by about half a million visitors. Every day, the library is visited on average by 1-2 thousand researchers, graduate students, students, other specialists. A special category of visitors are such bodies of state power as the Cabinet of Ministers, the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, the Administration of the President. Also, many people will be impressed by the following information: approximately 160-180 thousand of various printed products (books, magazines, monographs, etc.) enter the library each year.

It should be said that there is also an electronic library of Vernadsky, which is visited daily by a huge number of people. There, in the first place, you can find information about those publications that are in the library itself. Since this information portal is rather young, it is constantly updated with new data.

About treasures

It should be said that this is not just an ordinary city library. It is a kind of a storehouse of knowledge, which is filled not only with important scientific literature, but also has its so-called treasures. Among the assets of the National Library of Vernadsky one can find the following values:

1. The Peresopnytsia Gospel (1556-1561) is a document in which the President takes the oath at the inauguration.
2. Slipchensky Apostle, a manuscript of the 12th century.
3. The treatise of Matvey Krakowski is a special monument of typography of the 15th century.
4. The Kiev Pechersk Paterik (1553-1554) is also a special monument of the original literature of the times of Kievan Rus.
5. "History of animals" of the great Aristotle, which is printed on parchment (there are only two such specimens in the world).
6. "Apostle" Ivan Fedorov, which is the first book printed in Ukraine.

And this is not a complete list of all the treasures of the library. This list can be continued for a very long time.

About difficulties

A few words worth mentioning also are that to understand all the nuances of the work of the VI Lenin National Library. Vernadsky is not so simple. The first nuance, which quite often causes resentment: not all people can get a pass to this library. So, the entrance there is allowed to researchers, graduate students. Without problems, a pass will be given to students who have a bachelor's degree. In the past, only the student who is engaged in scientific activity can obtain a permission to use the materials of the library (for this you must provide a certificate of this from the place of study). The next difficulty is bureaucracy when you receive books (for each printed product you want to get, you need to fill out a special sheet, which takes quite a long time). Also, an awful long hour of waiting for the book, which is delivered from the storehouse for 40-80 minutes, will seem to many.
