"Vatican Records." Criticism

Analyzing the film "Vatican Records", critics' reviews are left mostly sorrowful, speaking for the most part not even about the shortcomings of a particular film, but about the problem of the genre as such.

The problem of the genre

Horror in the 21st century do not live and do not die - they probably exist. Genre innovation has long been gone. The modern viewer is no longer surprised by the style of mokyumentari (a pseudo-documentary manner of exposition), and after him nothing very new and radical was created by filmmakers. However, there are individual film fans who thank the people who created the Vatican Records (their reviews are rather sarcastic), because they do not force the viewer to watch for two hours the events that were allegedly shot accidentally on the phone or surveillance cameras.

Plot

Comment on the film "Vatican Records" of domestic film critic Boris Khokhlov calls the film's narration another banal plot about obsession, pointing out that the movie does not save even a brisk visual style from the creator of "Adrenaline". According to the plot, on its 25th birthday the main character is a young girl Angela (Olivia Dudley) - accidentally gravely seriously injures her finger. Her boyfriend Pete (John Patrick Amedori) and father (Dougray Scott) take the victim to the hospital, and from that moment the girl begins to change. Some time for the heroine watches the former military, and now the priest father Lozano (Michael Peña), which gradually comes to the conclusion that Angela is obsessed.

Heroes ask for help in the Vatican. Rereading a brief description of the plot of the film, you can see that in front of the viewer is really a classic template story about demonic obsession. This is how the "Vatican Records" characterize the feedback of viewers.

Debut in "solo" directing

Directed by Mark Neveldine until recently was half of the creative duet "Taylor-Neveldine", at one time rather cheerfully declared himself in the film industry the inexorable "Adrenaline". After the triumph, Adrenalin-2, Ghost Rider-2 and Gamer followed, which did not justify their hopes, so the duo broke up. It is no accident that "Vatican Records" reviews the film as the debut of Nevelidein in "solo" directing. Although the independent work of the director is difficult to call successful. The story behind the script is patterned, and during the viewing, it seems that Neveldine, gushing with energy, knows very vaguely what to do with the material of the film. All the techniques of an energetic, snobbish, expressive director are so counter-indicative to such a horror.

Reviews and reviews on the film "Vatican Records" are full of remarks: where you need to immobilize the camera and sustain a pause, as if peering into the darkness (pumping suspense), Mark Neveldine experiments with unusual shooting angles and color filters. The result is a chic, visually expressive stylish clip that looks nice, but not a bit scary.

Writer's scripts

Each second review of the film "Vatican Records" criticizes the work of the script writers. They accuse K. Borrelli, M. S. Martin, K. Morgan of negligence. Indeed, the script of the film literally bursts at the seams, while all the attention of the director goes to the visual "packaging". The viewer has already seen everything that script writers offer in Omen, The Exorcist, The Rite, The Last Exile of the Devil, The Hand of the Devil and The Obsessed. At the same time, quite important and significant segments in the narrative are "swallowed", the characters are doing strange and incompetent things. For example, the behavior of the exorcist at the climax is simply insane. After viewing the picture "Vatican Records" reviews of the movie ordinary viewers, the inhabitants point to an excessive tear, characterizing it as pathos in the picture of an inappropriate spill. There is no academism in it, as in The Exorcist, the pathos in Neveldine's project is surreal and hooligan.

Cast

The acting composition of the painting "Vatican Records" was received by critics and viewers with positive comments: no one made any special claims. Each of the performers got the opportunity to show their acting skills. Even Dugrey Scott ("The Story of Everlasting Love"), familiar to the spectator by roles of villains, looked in the role of a caring and loving father in surprisingly organic manner.

Brilliantly coped with the party of the father of Lozano Michael Penny ("To hell and back"), which now and then experiments with shifts of roles. Jimon Hunsu (Blood Diamond, Gladiator), Michael Pare and Peter Anderson ("The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo") supplemented the star ensemble. The most vivid and exciting image of the obsessive protagonist was created by Olivia Taylor Dudley. The reliability of her game serves as the best confirmation of the actress's outstanding dramatic talent. One of the secondary roles went to the Russian actor and singer Alexei Vorobyov ("Suicide", "Deffchonka").

Summary

It can not be categorically asserted that the Vatican Records (critics can be put aside) are not catching at all. After watching the movie there are some fragments of emotions, good plans are remembered, like where the main heroine is sitting in the attic in the rays of light, and also the impressive non-destructed Olivia Dudley, who will soon appear in the next part of the "Paranormal phenomenon." Perhaps the main role in the film Neveldine becomes for the actress a watershed and directs her straight to the top of the Hollywood Olympus.
