Ultrasound of the newborn brain: reliable and safe research!

A newborn brain ultrasound (neurosonography) is a study that allows ultrasound to see the child's brain in order to identify defects, diseases or changes in the structure of the brain and brain tissues.

Ultrasound of the brain is a fairly safe method. The child does not receive any radiation, therefore it is possible to conduct a neurosonography as many times as necessary, depending on the doctor's appointment. The ultrasound of the infant's brain is an absolutely painless method of research, allowing it to be carried out even when the child is asleep. Neurosonography does not require additional medications. The procedure takes no more than 15 minutes, which is very convenient in the case of infants.

Some doctors recommend that ultrasound of the brain of the newborn be given to all children in order to prevent and early detection of pathological changes in the brain. This is due to the fact that some symptoms of brain damage appear after a year, and it's possible to notice something wrong in the infant period only with the help of ultrasound.

Ultrasound is a great advantage for children up to a year. Before there was an opportunity to conduct ultrasound of the brain of a newborn, doctors used a method such as computed tomography. This study is conducted under anesthesia, since the slightest movement can prevent the detection of pathology. In addition, CT scan involves the use of X-rays, which is undesirable for the child. The appearance of neurosonography completely removed the risk of exposure and the effects of narcotic substances on the child's body.

Ultrasound of the brain of a newborn is mandatory for premature babies and very large newborns, with suspected intrauterine infection, children with an irregular head shape, as well as severe newborns who require intensive care. This study is shown in the case of oxygen starvation of the brain, with severe and prolonged childbirth, with anomalies of other organs, as well as with neurologic disorders (convulsions, respiratory failure).

Conduct an ultrasound of the head through a large fontanel of a newborn, sometimes - through the lateral fontanel. Rodnichok is a site in the parietal region of the head, not covered with bone. The rodnik well passes the ultrasonic waves and makes it possible to study the structure of the brain. After a year, a large fontanel closes, and ultrasound is not possible.

Neurosonography is used to detect hemorrhages in the brain, brain developmental defects , hydrocephalus, brain tissue damage due to hypoxia. The ultrasound of the brain can detect cysts and tumors, dropsy, inflammation and cerebral ischemia.

Before the procedure, the skin over the large fontanel is lubricated with a special sound-conducting gel for better penetration of ultrasonic waves into the tissue and structure of the brain.

Neurosonography is a study that is conducted specifically for newborns and infants. Ultrasound of the brain in adults is not performed due to the inability to penetrate ultrasound through bone tissue. Thanks to the presence of fontanel on the head of the child, it is possible to carry out this research to newborns and children up to a year.

If it is necessary to carry out ultrasound of the brain to a newborn or a child up to a year, it should be remembered that the research should be carried out by a highly qualified specialist using modern equipment.

Ultrasound of the brain is a reliable and safe method, allowing to assess the state of structures and tissues of the brain. The use of this research method in infants is a great advantage over other methods of brain research in young children.
