Tui Columna: photo, description

There are many amazing plants, suitable both for creating magnificent hedges in gardens, alleys and homesteads in the fashionable Mediterranean style, and as a single decoration resembling the Crimean cypress in shape.

Among such plants, Tuyu West Colombo is favorably distinguished. It is a fairly unpretentious plant to the soil, accustomed to both acidic and alkaline fertile moist soils. It is sensitive only to the compaction of the surface of the soil and loves penumbra.

The native land of Tui is North America. Its name denotes the concept of a "round pillar", which corresponds to the appearance of the plant.

Touya Columna: description

This is a coniferous tree, reaching a height of 5 to 10 m. The diameter of its crown is about 1.5 meters. The annual increase in plant growth is 15-20 cm in height and up to 7 cm in width. Dark green shiny scaly needles retain color even in winter. Rare brownish cones have an oblong-ovate shape, about 1 cm long. Seeds in cones are flat with two narrow wings and in the first year ripen in autumn.

Prefers loam, calmly tolerates both dry soil and excessive moisture. The main thing is, the plant is frost-hardy. The peculiarity is its very slow growth.

A beautiful conical and dense crown has thuya Columna, the photo above demonstrates this clearly.

Landing rules

When planting, you should always observe the distance between plants at least 0.5 meters. And in the hedge at a 2-row planting it should be approximately 0.7 m, and when planted in 1 row - 0.5 m. In the alleys, the recommended interval for planting trees is 4 m. In depth, the plant is planted on 60-80 cm The latter depends on the diameter of the crown and the height of the tree.

Well grows thuya Column both in the lighted place, and in the penumbra. However, in more sunny areas, it may suffer a little from temperature fluctuations (or in the heat it dries up, or dehydrates from frost). She loves thuya protected from the wind.

The root neck of the plant should stay at about the level of the ground when planting. The composition of the soil is suitable for tuja: peat, sand, sheet and turf ground (ratio 1: 1: 2) with the addition of mineral fertilizers in the amount of 500 grams of nitroammofoski for each adult thuju. You can plant it on any soil: peaty, marshy, clayey, on dry sandy loam, etc. You should use drainage (15-20 cm layer) in case of planting on underlying clay.

Care

Tuya, like all plants, accepts fertilizers well. But, it should be remembered that spring top dressing (fertilizer complex "Kemiru-universal") is introduced after planting only after 1 year. Take 100-120 grams of fertilizer per 1 square meter.

Watering is recommended as follows:

  • After planting the first month - once a week for 10 liters of water per plant (in the same way produce and sprinkling);
  • In the drier season - 15-20 liters per plant, but twice to produce sprinkling.

On plots with dry soil and in the shadow of the crown, the thuja begins to thin out.

Loosening should be carried out shallow (up to 10 cm) - this is due to the fact that the root system has a superficial root system . Mulching is recommended to produce a layer of peat or chips (up to 7 cm). Also, dry shoots should be removed annually. If necessary (creating a hedge), the plant can be cut, but not more than a third of the length of the shoot and mold its crown.

In winter, in the first year after planting, thuya Columna needs warming.

Age plants are rather winter hardy. The only drawback is that the fir needles are exposed to spring and winter burns. It is desirable to protect it from both spring and winter direct sunlight. For this purpose, the tuya is sheltered by a bogie or special material.

Conclusion

Thuya Columna is a beautiful plant that gives an attractive look to any dacha site, alley and park zone.

Since it is rather unpretentious, any amateur horticulturist can grow such an exotic plant, while observing the above-described features and rules of caring for her.
