Treatment of Restless Leg Syndrome: What to Do

Rest is an integral part of the life of modern man. Tired of the exhausting working day, a person is waiting with impatience of the time when he can lie down on the pillow and plunge into a sound sleep. But sometimes it happens that in a dream a person wakes up from what he starts with his feet, and often with his hands, to make arbitrary movements, and he does it unconsciously, that is, the whole process is controlled by something else. Along with the movements themselves, various sensations appear in the muscles. What they are, not all patients can convey in words. Some mention burning, tingling, feeling of heaviness, twitching, and others refer to sharp periodic or prolonged pain. This disorder sleep scientists have given the name, as a restless legs syndrome (RLS).

It is worth noting that RLS occurs as during a night or day sleep, and at a time when a person just lay down on the sofa to rest. Of course, such a frustration is not pleasant, because it interferes with rest and gaining strength before a new working day. People suffering from the most severe forms of RLS sleep, as a rule, very little, for 4-5 hours. It's clear that in the end they have a broken look, they are tired and unwilling to do anything.

Why there is restless legs syndrome? Scientists have long been looking for an answer to this question, and so far only came to the conclusion that the main cause can be considered a violation of the chemical balance of the brain. But this has not yet been proved.

According to statistics, RLS most often occurs in women than in men. Age in this case does not play any role. The restless legs syndrome in children is also not uncommon, and this disorder is most often deciphered as "pain of growth". Scientists, focusing specifically on children's RLS, came to the conclusion that it is directly related to hyperactivity and attention deficit. But again, these are only conjectures, which have no experimental confirmation.

The restless legs syndrome in pregnant women also attracts special attention, because if an ordinary person still somehow can endure and survive all, then during pregnancy, RLS constitutes a big threat to the bearing of the baby. A pregnant woman does not get enough sleep, feels bad, gets tired faster. By the way, scientists managed to prove the direct connection of the disease with both pregnancy and a number of other conditions. For example, such as a lack of iron in the body, the use of antidepressants and sedative antihistamines, etc.

What should be the treatment for restless legs syndrome? It is worth noting that it depends on a number of factors, and in order to build the right course of action, it is best to seek medical help from a somnologist. Many people get along well with this disorder, and do not resort to taking medicines and even more so, neglect the visit to the doctor. Treatment of restless legs syndrome in this case is the fulfillment of some simple rules:

• If the movements prevent sleep, then you need to stand up and walk around the room for a while. Thus, the limbs will receive the necessary load and will fall asleep.

· Before going to bed, you can make cool or hot baths for your feet. Just need to watch what really helps: cold or warm.

· Many claim that RLS appears when heavy food is eaten at night. In this case, it is best to make the last meal before going to bed.

· Stress and depression are not the best friends of good sleep. It is best not to drive yourself into such conditions, and then there is a chance to spend all the following nights without a restless legs syndrome.

In fact, everyone struggles in different ways with such a sleep disorder. But again, it is more expedient to coordinate the treatment of restless legs syndrome with a physician as a somnologist. He can prescribe some sleep studies, ask the patient to start a diary and fix in it those moments when uncontrolled limb movements begin to appear. Based on the received data, they can be prescribed such medicines as sleeping pills, narcotic analgesics and separate anticonvulsants. To accelerate the treatment of restless legs syndrome, you should walk more often in the fresh air, do foot massage, take hot baths, exercise on an exercise bike and take a vitamin complex.
