Toothache during pregnancy: causes and effects

A pregnant woman often has problems with her teeth. Toothache during pregnancy is usually associated with hormonal changes that occur in the body. But the causes can serve as factors such as caries, pulpitis or periodontitis. If the pain occurs when you get into the affected cavity of food residues, as well as a sharp pain when drinking cold or hot liquid, then, most likely, the reason for this - caries. When tooth decay is not treated on time, it can develop into pulpitis or periodontitis.

Toothache in pregnant women is observed quite often, and, very quickly, tooth decay develops into periodontitis. This is due to the fact that changes occurring at the level of hormones occur in the blood and mucous membranes. Therefore, inflammation of the periodontal tissue develops rapidly. The result of periodontitis may be the development of gingivitis (an inflammatory process in the gum area), which is common in pregnant women.

If the tooth hurts during pregnancy, one of the reasons for this may be a violation of calcium metabolism in the body. If the body is healthy initially, and calcium is normal, then there will be no such violations. If on the contrary, it should be remembered that in the third trimester the active formation of the skeleton of the child is observed, and at this time, if there is insufficient quantity of calcium in the blood of the woman, her deficiency is compensated from her own bone tissue, first of all, from the teeth. Thus, the ligaments that hold the tooth in the alveolus lose calcium, which inevitably leads to periodontitis.

Lack of calcium can be a consequence of worsening of chronic diseases. When the disease is associated with a dysfunction of the stomach or intestine, this can disrupt the proper absorption of this structural element. This situation leads to a decrease in the level of calcium in the body.

Toothache during pregnancy can also be caused by a decrease in the protective properties of saliva. This process is inevitable, as in the future mothers there is a change in the work of many functions, in particular, the salivary glands. As a result, the number of microbes that cause caries intensively multiplies in the oral cavity.

As a rule, pregnant women do not always have the opportunity to visit a dentist. In this case, you can try to ease your condition at home.

Initially, the inflamed cavity of the tooth should be cleaned of the element that causes pain. This can be done with the help of specialized toothpastes or rinses for the mouth. With unbearable pain, you can take painkillers, but not more than two tablets. As you know, uncontrolled use of medications can harm the fetus and the mother.

If the toothache during pregnancy causes aching, but unsharp pain, you can eliminate it by rinsing:

  • 0.5 soda / 0.5 salt per cup of boiled water;
  • 4 tablets of furatsilina on a glass of warm boiled water

There are special solutions for rinsing and dental drops. All of the above means disinfect and anesthetize the inflamed part of the tooth. However, one must remember that the relief is temporary, the cause of the pain can not be destroyed by the solution. Therefore, a visit to the doctor should not be postponed.

The development of modern medicine is rapidly moving forward. To date, there are many dental clinics that work around the clock. They are created just in case of elimination of sharp pain, and also treatment of every possible complex inflammatory processes.

But problems with teeth - this is a case that is much easier to prevent than to treat later. To do this, you must first of all visit a dentist at the beginning of pregnancy or (if pregnancy is planned) immediately before her. The doctor will prescribe the vitamins you need and will cure your teeth in time, if such an intervention is required.

Remember that toothache during pregnancy can have many causes and quickly develops into serious problems that it is very difficult for future mothers to eliminate. So do not be afraid to go to the dentist! The sooner you do this, the more painless it will be for you and your baby!
