Tips for gardeners: how to harbor grapes for the winter

Each perennial garden plant requires a certain preparation for the winter period, and take care of quality and competent insulation must be on time. And so the question is urgent: how to cover the grapes for the winter? Every owner knows that this process is very important, but it is far from simple, and time requires a lot. Therefore, many would like to find a way that would allow the grapes to safely winter, and would not be too time-consuming.

Under what conditions and how to cover the grapes in winter

If in your garden grow harvested varieties of grapes, and they include many dining and technical varieties, then you should definitely take care of their protection from frost. And you need to do this even if you live in regions closer to the south. The fact is that even minor frosts, alternating with thaws, cause icing of the vines, and such a crust affects the plant no less detrimentally than a severe frost. In addition, the grave enemies of the grapes are snowless and windy winters, and an experienced gardener always remembers it. Before you cover the grapes for the winter, you should remove all undergrowth shoots, because they will still freeze. In addition, you need to consider that in constant dampness the grapes can rot, so you need to take care of the dryness of the shelter. Dangerous for plants and temperature extremes. For example, at +10 о С it starts sap flow, but if the indices fall to minus values, the water in the tissues will freeze, which will lead to their rupture, and all grapes may die. How to shelter a plant for the winter so that it does not happen? First, the shelter should be reliable, and secondly, it should be equipped, when a stable temperature, close to zero, is already established.

Warm "coat" for grapes

You can start to cover plants in the middle of October. There are several ways to "conserve" the vine and roots for the winter. You can simply tie the vine into bundles and lay it on the ground, sprinkling it with a layer of soil 7-10 cm thick. And some wine growers prefer to wrap the bush with sacking beforehand, and then fill it with earth up to a height of 35 cm or cover them with wooden shields. On top of the latter, it is necessary to spread and securely fix the plastic film or roofing material - these materials will protect the plant from thawed water. For additional warming of the vineyard, it is recommended to sketch a thick layer of snow on it. Another way to hide grapes for the winter is to use white polyethylene film. It is interesting that under it the temperature is 1.5 degrees higher than under black polyethylene. Remember that it is necessary to insulate not only the vine, but also the roots. By the way, the vine more easily tolerates frosts than the root system.

Provide snow retention

Snow retention is a very important stage in the process of how to harbor grapes for the winter. In order that blizzards, accompanied by strong winds, can not remove a snow "coat" from the vineyards, it is necessary to install 1.5-meter wooden shields for snow retention in accessible areas. Similar functions can be performed by fruit trees (apple, pear, plum and sea-buckthorn), planted from the side of constant winds.
