Melomaniacs who often watch clips, download music or just listen to new songs online, could notice that in the headings of some songs in the place where the group name or the name of the music performer usually is located, you can meet a strange mark of ft or feat. What does it mean and what functions does it perform? In order to understand what is the meaning of this note in the title of the song, you must first turn to the etymology of the word.

What is feat?

If you translate it from English, the most popular meaning is the noun "feat." However, you can decipher feat in another way. Some English-Russian translation dictionaries offer such variants of meanings as "skill" or "dexterity". But none of them explain the meaning of such an insert between the names of the performers of the songs. To understand this question will help to address the morphology of the word or its grammatical properties.

Feat - what does it mean? Morphological properties

The first line in the articles of dictionaries with translations is often occupied by the names of nouns. However, words can refer to other parts of speech, depending on the context in which they are used. The word feat, which means "feat", in English can be used in texts as the noun, adjective and even adverb. The translation of the word in the meaning of the noun has already been presented above, the same adjective means "clever, skilful," that is, the derivatives of the definition from the secondary meanings. However, in this context - the name and representation of musical performers - the most appropriate is the use of the word as an adverb. Then everything falls into place. In such a part of speech, the word has a value approximating the meaning of the preposition "for" or the adverb "together". That is, one artist complements the work of another, writing for him a musical accompaniment, accompanying him or acting as a backing vocalist. Thus, the adverb of feat, which means "for" or "together", between the names of performers emphasizes their joint work, and also indicates that one of the musicians dominates, the other - complements. The use of feat or ft in this context is typical for the show business industry. By the way, here ft is already a derivative of the main word, that is, an abbreviation.

Feat in song titles

Today the insertion of ft in the title of the song can be found not only among foreign, but also among Russian artists. It's a fashionable way to demonstrate teamwork - singing a duet. Or a good attempt to bring a new musician to the big stage. Usually, well-known producers act by offering the star to record a joint composition with a young protégé. A little-known artist instantly gets his share of glory, though, at the same time, he risks being left in the shadow of a popular favorite of the public.

Now, when it became clear what feat means in songs, you can give several examples of using the word by Russian and foreign artists: Rihanna ft Jay-Z, Bianka feat Jigan, LMFAO ft Justin Bieber, Igor Krutoy ft A-Studio, Jennyfer Lopez ft Iggy Azalea .
