The river Osetr is a unique river of Russia

The river Osetr begins near the village Melekhovka on the Central Russian Upland in the Tula region. It flows into the Oka near Kolomna in the Moscow region. Tributaries of Sturgeon, giving a significant increase in water: Verkusha, Venevka and Mordves. The remaining tributaries are very small. Two reservoirs have been built on the river: Livadia and Zaraisk, and also the Silver Ponds dam. The river Sturgeon is 50-80 meters wide. But near Zaraysk its width reaches 1.2 kilometers. Sturgeon is shallow. Its average depth is 1.5 meters. In many places the river can easily be crossed by a ford (water does not reach the ankles). But at the same time it is rich in whirlpools 3-5 meters deep. Among all the rivers near Moscow, only Osetra has shavers and ruts. The length of the river is 228 kilometers. From November to April it is covered with ice. The river Osetr is not navigable. On the shores mostly grow shrubs, there are small oak forests, but there are no coniferous forests .

Ichthyofauna

The river Osetr is famous for its richness and variety of fauna. By the variety of species of fish with this river, only Oka can argue. Sturgeon can boast of the presence of carp and bream, roach, crucian carp and perch, pike, pike perch and head, asp, tench, ruff and gudgeon. Before the dam was erected in the Silver Ponds, the sterlet and sturgeon lived in the river, it is not for nothing that the river was named Sturgeon.

Natural and historical monuments

Shores of Sturgeon are struck by the beauty and diversity of the relief: outcrops of limestone rocks, high river banks, reserved tracts, forests, wheat fields, springs. There are many natural and historical monuments here. The most significant of them - the city of Zaraysk and Byakovskie quarries. The latter are the longest underground system of the Moscow region. Almost at every step here there are small monuments of local significance. It is rich in ancient settlements, palaeolithic sites, barrows, ancient villages with eighteenth-century churches, holy springs, rocks and picturesque scenes of the Osetr River. At a distance of 200 meters from the confluence of Sturgeon in the Oka is the Holy Spring named after Nicholas the Wonderworker with a cross. Here, those who wish can collect holy water from a spring or bathe in a bath. A chapel of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker was built near the source. This place is famous for the fact that it was here that Prince Feodor was met by the Korsun Icon of Nicholas the Wonderworker, which gave rise to the erection of the city of Zaraisk. This icon was kept for a long time in the church of St. Nicholas. Now she was transported to the Andrei Rublev Museum in Moscow.

Creeping town

On a twenty-meter-high rock near the river Osetr there is an archaeological monument - the tract Stone Hill, or Shchuchy town, which is an ancient fortification fortification. The main attraction of this place is the cave Falcon grotto.

The tract The protected Dubrava, located on the steep bank of Sturgeon near the village of Kluchevoye, is characterized by the presence of rare plant species.
