How many words exist that have several meanings. For example, everyone knows that the word "star" can be associated with such concepts as a public person, a geometric figure, a heavenly body. The multi-valued word "handle" associated with the door can also describe a part of the human body. And what associations causes the word "lyre"? How many meanings of a given word, and in what sphere of life does it use?

The meaning of the word "lyre" in music

An ancient plucked instrument was widely known in ancient times in Greece and Rome. Although at first he designated each instrument from the family of lyres. In a narrow sense, it was the helis tool - the easiest and lightest weight, made of tortoise shell. The musical lyre consists of several elements: a body (maybe rounded or quadrangular) that connects to a bar with two handles, and strings that were formerly made of sheep intestines, stretched between the body and the crossbar.

It is interesting that there is another tool that carries the same name. It was distributed in Byelorussia and Ukraine. It is a reed instrument called the wheel lyre. It produces a more powerful, but monotonous and sad sound.

The meaning of the word "lyre" in the literature

How often, when studying literature, we hear such concepts as lyrics, lyrical work and a hero, but do not think about where it came from, and why it is so often mentioned by writers and poets. Of course, the meaning of the word "lyre" was borrowed from music by metamorphic transfer. When the musicians played the instrument, they sang songs, which directly related poetic creativity to this word, and after a while it became a symbol of poetry and inspiration.

This word was very often used by Russian classics, including Pushkin and Nekrasov. For example, let us recall two lines from Pushkin's poem:

"And for a long time I will be so kind to the people,

I kindled lyra with good lyra. "

Of course, the poet does not write about a musical instrument, but about his creativity, through which he communicates his thoughts and feelings to people. And so Nekrasov wrote in the work "Elegy":

"To the people to arouse the attention of the powerful world -

What more worthy could a lyre serve? "

Do not forget that in the literature this word has a symbolic meaning, which was used by poets and contemporary artists. Lira is the harmony of numbers, planets, elements.

Currency unit

The meaning of the word "lyre" can be interpreted as the monetary unit of Italy and Turkey. It denotes a coin of the corresponding denomination. In Turkey, for the first time such a coin was introduced in the 1870s, but in 2005 a new Turkish lira appeared.

However, it should be clarified that until recently in Italy, the Vatican, San Marino and Malta, the Italian lira was the official currency until the countries switched to the euro. An interesting point is that in Lebanon, Syria, Israel, and until recently and in Cyprus, also has its own national currency, which in Greek and Turkish is called lyre, but in Russian it is called pound.

Where else is this word used

Many people know the concept of the lyre as a musical instrument or monetary currency, especially those who travel a lot and collect coins. But not everyone knows that the lyre is present practically in every field of science and, for example, in astronomy means the constellation of the Northern Hemisphere. In zoology, this word was used for the name of a bird whose tail is similar to a musical instrument, and also called it a beast that resembles a skunk that is found in North America. The word is also used for the name of the music festival in the Belgorod region and as the name of the city in Uganda.
