"The Lay of Igor's Host": a summary of the chapters

In the 12th century an unknown author created "The Lay of Igor's Host". The brief content of this work is offered to your attention.

Prince Igor heads the campaign of the northern princes. He is watching a solar eclipse that occurred on May 1, 1185 and foreshadowing defeat, but still decides to fight to the end and sent with his team on the road. From the very beginning of the campaign, the regiment of Igor is pursued by bad omens. The squad had to go out to the sea, into the steppes, to Korsun, Surozhu and Tmutorokani, as the author of the novel "The Lay of Igor's Host" writes. The summary of parts of this work, like the story itself, begins with the following events.

Omens

The author mentions omens only briefly, describing them in pictures: howling animals in the night, clicking Diva, creaking carts of Polovtsians hiding from the Russian squad. Only night remains until the upcoming first battle. It ends successfully, the army receives a rich booty and settles down to rest in the field. Igor's team falls asleep ...

Severe battles

We continue to talk about the work "The Lay of Igor's Host". The summary tells about the following events. There are severe battles with the Polovtsians from Friday to Sunday, which coincide with their description in the Ipatiev Chronicle. The courage of the Russian people is depicted in the combat of Prince Vsevolod. He, like the hero of the Iliad, shines with a golden helmet and cuts through the hated enemies. Vsevolod does not think about the honor of the prince's tables, nor about his "belly" (life), nor about Chernigov, nor about the beautiful Glebovna. Such are the princes in the novel The Lay of Igor's Host. But the courage of this warrior is vain in the battle on the Kayal River, which has become fatal for the Russian squad.

The campaigns of Oleg Svyatoslavich

The author of the novel "The Lay of Igor's Campaign", a brief summary of which is presented in this article, continues to tell us about further developments. The campaigns of Oleg Svyatoslavich, the ancestor of Igor, who was the last to be renamed Gorislavovich, evoke sad and heavy memories from the narrator. In princely internecine strife, people and princes died. Arrows rushed, the sound of swords could be heard, and darks and crows circled over the fields.

At the sight of St. Sophia the author mentally transferred to Kayala, where the third day is a battle. Igor turns the shelves to release from captivity Vsevolod, his brother. But it was already too late - brave warriors fell on the shore of Kayala. Perhaps this name is a common name from the Polovtsian Kaigu, Kaigu (the name of a woeful place), or it's Kalmius, Kagalnik, Kalchik. Igor's regiment is defeated.

"The Golden Word" of Svyatoslav

This is an important part of the work "The Lay of Igor's Host". The summary of it will be described below. The narrative continues to weep for the dead, it is said about the further advance of the Polovtsians to the Russian land, remorse is remembered. The author believes that the reason for Kiev's present moans, his sorrow and the Polovtsy's misfortune are the imprudence of the princes, their internecine strife, and claims to others.

The scene of action is now transferred to Kiev. Venetians, Germans, Greeks and Moravians are pleased with the success of Prince Svyatoslav and sympathize with the misfortune that befell Igor. Svyatoslav dreams a dream, and then follows his interpretation of the boyars. After that, we are talking about the famous "golden word" of Prince Svyatoslav. In a dream, he sees a strange and, as the author says, a spoiled place. The Grand Duke dreamed that a beam cracked in the "tower" with goldsmith, crows crowed and flew to the sea from Obolon. The prince began to prepare for burial, and then mourn.

Answer of the boyars

This sinister dream of the boyars was interpreted by Svyatoslav. They said that two falcons flew out of the "golden table of the father's", they were captured in the wayside and "hastened" the wings to the birds. Under them are four captured Russian prince: Vsevolod, Igor, Svyatoslav and Oleg. The boyars' speech gradually turns into figurative crying.

Then Svyatoslav utters the "golden word", where he blames Igor and Vsevolod for arrogance. He wants to avenge his nest, but he already knows how Vladimir Glebovich groans under Polovtsian sabers.

Appeal to the princes

Then not the author, or Svyatoslav calls on the forces of all Russia and princes: Vsevolod and Glebovich, David and Rurik, Rostislavich, Yaroslav Osmomysl and Mstislav with Roman. All of the above are brave warriors. Yaroslav Chernigovsky wins with steppe regiments with one click. Prince Vsevolod can sprinkle the Volga with oars, and dig the Don with his brow. Rurik and David are not afraid of blood or wounds.

Then, after mentioning the Polotsk princes, who are the descendants of Vseslav the Prophet, the narrator passes to their ancestor - Vseslav. He is shown in actions near Novgorod and Kiev. In Kiev, he can hear the bells of St. Sofia. The hero remembers the once strong bond with Vladimir, at a time when there was no discord between the princes. This is indicated by the author for calling for revenge for Igor's offense.

Return of Igor

Then comes the return of the Grand Duke. His stay in captivity is not described at all. The author does not remember a word about other princes who were in captivity, as well as about the actions of the Polovtsians. The most important person is Igor. An important place is also given to his wife - Yaroslavna, who mourns her husband's injuries and the defeat of the Russian squad, foreseeing their early return.

Lamentations of Yaroslavna

This episode is considered to be one of the most lyrical motifs of the work. On the city's visor, in the city of Putivle (located not far from Kursk), at dawn Yaroslavna mourns her husband. It refers to the elements: the Dnieper-Slovutich, the wind, the sun. The Dnieper can only carry her tears to the sea, the wind to dispel her joy, and the sun to pull bows to the Rusys in an arid field, making them unable to stretch the bow.

Igor's escape from captivity

The work "The Lay of Igor's Host" is coming to an end. You can compose a summary of the reader diary on the basis of this article, including in it quotes from the story.

Further events are as follows. The chronicle of Igor says that God did not leave the righteous in the hands of sinners. And in the "Word" is narrated about his escape. The author describes in detail how cleverly chosen this prince, how he overcame the steppes, hiding and hunting his food, as he swam across the Don.

An unknown author recalls the song about the death of Rostislav, brother of Prince Vladimir Monomakh, which occurred a hundred years earlier than Igor went on his trip. Konchak and Gzak tried to catch the fugitive, but they had to reconcile themselves with the escape, they even began to count on him as a friend, who could be close to each other both in language and in customs and marriage to the steppe people. But they were mistaken - Igor is faithful to the Russian land. The author quickly transfers the hero to Kiev, to the joy of people.

Ends with "The Lay of Igor's Host", the summary of which was presented above, in a word to Russian princes, perhaps still captive, as well as to his deceased brave squad.

The work is, undoubtedly, very important for the history of our country and the further development of Russian literature. But not only writers and poets addressed in their work to the work to which this article is devoted (its brief content). Opera "The Lay of Igor's Host" was created by the great composer Borodin and reflects all the features of the musicality and rhythm of this story.
