In total, the museum has more than 35 thousand exhibits.

It was created in 1958 on the basis of the disbanded air division, which was based there, in Monino. For a year and a half the organizers prepared the exposition for the opening, and on February 23, 1960 it was held, gathering a large number of spectators and military. At the time of the opening, it was possible to find operated and experimental airplanes and helicopters of predominantly civil type in the museum.

All exhibits are located in hangars, halls and even in the open air. In the exposition you can find civil and military aircraft, samples of weapons, tools and uniforms. Everyone can visit the foreign exposition, where you can admire aviation equipment, which was used during the Second World War.

Exposition and history of the museum (1958-1972)

The Central Museum of the Russian Air Force is located in several rooms. The main building of the museum was erected in 1932-1934. And is wooden. In the future, it is planned to reconstruct the premises, however, specific dates are not yet known. The total area of all enclosed premises is 5.5 thousand square meters, the total area of the open space, where exhibits are also placed, is 20 hectares.

At the time of the opening of the museum in it there were only 586 exhibits, for all the time of its existence their number has increased several tens times. For ten years, the Air Force Museum in Monino has been growing in popularity and expanding, it became possible thanks to the active assistance of the command of the Air Force of the Russian Federation.

History of the Museum (1972-1991)

In 1972, the head of the museum became Lieutenant-General S.Ya. Fedorov, it was then that the institution underwent a number of changes. The Museum of the Air Force in Monino at that time did not have in its collection of any fighter created in the bureau of A.S. Yakovlev, there were no other machines that played a huge role in the Great Patriotic War.

Fedorov, having gathered several groups of enthusiasts, started searching for missing planes. They compiled a number of maps on which the detected vehicles were noted, and a register of aircraft was also created, which can be evacuated to the museum, and then carried out their capital repair. Difficult work has brought excellent results.

Monino, whose museum was already popular, was replenished almost weekly with new exhibits. Through such searches, it was possible to get Il-2, Yak-9, SB and some other aircraft into the collection. Some aircraft could not be evacuated immediately, the process took several years. Those cars that could be restored, were among the exhibits of the museum.

The history of the museum (1991-our days)

In the early 1990s, the museum staff did a great job of arranging exhibits in open spaces and in hangars. The exposition was built in chronological order, which allowed to change the general appearance of the museum. Visitors to the museum became much more comfortable navigating in its territory.

The Air Force Museum in Monino in the mid-1990s very often changed its leadership; moreover, the civilian post of the head was abolished, and a military one was introduced instead. The museum continues to improve its own organizational structure, as of 2015, it has four additional departments: propaganda, restoration, acquisition and exposition.

The number of visitors to the museum is constantly increasing, among them the military, students, workers, schoolchildren, etc. Every day the museum conducts excursions for all comers, their frequent participants are foreign tourists. The museum has already visited people from more than 80 countries, all of them were delighted with the magnificent state of the exhibits. According to the museum's management, more than three million people have visited the Monino since the opening of the exposition, and this figure is steadily growing.

Why in Monino?

The Central Museum of the Russian Air Force did not just turn up in the village of Monino. It was there that in 1940 they placed the Air Force Academy, which could train at the new airfield. In existing premises it was possible to accommodate up to 4 thousand people, than the academy immediately took advantage of, replacing the school of aviation specialists that was there.

In the autumn of 1940, the Academy began its first academic year. In the period from 1941 to 1945 on the basis of the educational institution and the aerodrome, the Air Force units participating in combat operations were deployed. It was there that the legendary IL-4, long-range bombers, which played an important role in the battles for Moscow, were located at the time.

In 1943, on the basis of the Academy, a training regiment was formed, which successfully functioned until October 1946, when it was transformed into a mixed division. The last classes at the academy took place in April 1956. The airfield became too small for high-speed aircraft, and there was no opportunity to extend the lane.

It was then decided to organize a museum in Monino Aviation, to use the existing area and keep the existing garrison. Within a few months the academy vacated premises, and by autumn of 1956 the airfield was completely ready for the organization of the museum establishment.
