The Inspector is ... The meanings and the origin of the word

Using a certain word in colloquial speech , we, as a rule, attach to it some definite meaning associated with a particular situation. And these values are sometimes several. Let's take a closer look, who is the auditor? What does this word mean? What does the auditor do?

Explanatory Dictionary of Ephraim

This interpreter offers several definitions:

  1. An auditor is an official who performs an audit (inspection).
  2. On a military ship - a person from the command staff, who is in charge of the economy (now the availability of this post is canceled).
  3. In the railway service (its separate branches), the auditor is the controller.

In fact, the dictionaries of Ozhegov and Ushakov contain similar definitions of the word.

The meaning of the word auditor, his origin

This foreign word, which entered into the Russian language, comes from the Latin revidere, which means "to look." The auditor is the inspector, the controller, the auditor, the inspector (according to the dictionary of synonyms). A person authorized to audit, examining the activities of any given institution or official (a legal dictionary, a dictionary of business terms, an economic dictionary).

What does the auditor do?

With the meaning of the word, like, everything is clear. Now, what exactly is the auditor authorized to do. The main thing is, of course, carrying out inspections (audits) in various organizations (mostly state, but sometimes private), researching the activities of a certain person (usually an official). And the auditor in itself does not make any decisions. This is done by the relevant bodies that have the right to do so. The auditor only collects information - it's bad or good - and passes a report on the work done, on the basis of which decisions have already been taken. Therefore, if the activity is conducted in accordance with established norms, then the inspector should not be afraid, because you are all right! However, in reality everything is much more complicated.

Computer program

And "Inspector" is an electronic program that remembers the status of a personal computer, monitors file changes in the system and reports important or suspicious actions to the user.

Literary work

And the "Inspector" - this is the famous comedy of Gogol. In it, the writer showed the life and customs of the small town N, a kind of model of the state in miniature. Here, as if in a drop of water, reflected all the vices and abuses of officials and bureaucrats of then-Russia: bribery, embezzlement, embezzlement. All this ruthlessly beats Gogol in his work. One of the main characters of the play of the same name is an inspector, a little man, Khlestakov, who for some reason is mistaken for an important inspector, an official from St. Petersburg who is supposedly omnipotent and has unlimited power. So they complain to each other one by one, try in every possible way to appease and propitiate.

The play of criticism was called the revision of Russian society, it forced (and makes) look at itself in all eyes. It is not for nothing that NV Gogol took the epigraph to the work of the famous proverb about the mirror and face.

Modern auditors

Since the writing of the play has been many years, but little has changed in the relationship of the majority of the bureaucracy. All the same bribes are taken (and are given), sometimes all the same embezzlement, the same ingratiation of the fawning chiefs before the senior in rank and the rude, impudent attitude towards all those who are lower in rank is flourishing. To the general list, perhaps, added: falsification of elections, behind-the-scenes struggle of business clans, venality of journalism, purchase cost of deputies. Summing up, I would like to express my faith in the future honesty of the auditors of all stripes and the fact that the audited people will at last cease to be afraid of the inspectors.
