The gauge of pressure of oil VAZ-2114. Replacing the oil pressure switch

No internal combustion engine can work without a lubrication system. Motor oil, pumped by the oil pump, is fed through special channels to all moving parts of the power unit, reducing the frictional force, and cleaning them of unwanted deposits. Reducing oil pressure in the system will inevitably lead to the fact that it stops coming to the right place in the required quantity. And this, in turn, will cause increased friction and rapid wear of parts.

Control the pressure of oil in the engines of cars called a special pressure sensor (DDM). With it, the driver can always determine how well the lubrication system works.

In this article we will describe what the VAZ-2114 oil pressure sensor is, and what is the principle of its operation. In addition, we will consider how to check DDM for operability and replace it in case of failure.

Design and operation principle of DDM

The oil pressure sensor VAZ-2114 has a fairly simple design. It consists of:

  • Metal casing;
  • Measuring membrane;
  • Mechanism of contact closure;
  • Connector for connecting the transmission wire.

The principle of DDM is approximately this. The oil in the system under pressure, through the hole in the housing presses on the measuring membrane of the sensor. The contacts are in the open state. When the pressure in the system falls, the membrane is leveled, and the contacts close. Thus, the oil pressure sensor VAZ-2114 sends a signal to the vehicle's electronic control unit (ECU). The controller, in turn, informs the driver of a possible malfunction by turning on the warning light located on the instrument panel.

If the oil pressure sensor VAZ-2114

So, the included "red oil can" on the dashboard signals the driver that a failure has occurred in the lubrication system, which requires immediate intervention. What should the owner of the car do in this case? First, do not panic and stop moving. And secondly, try to understand what caused the switch to turn on.

First, you should determine what the level of oil in the system. To do this, just raise the hood, and armed with a napkin or a clean rag, take out the probe. Based on the scale available on it, you can determine whether there is oil in the system, and how much. If the level is below the minimum, then, somewhere, an oil leak has occurred. The reason for this may be a torn packing or a breach of the integrity of any of the gaskets. In addition, the oil pressure may drop due to the strong wear of the piston rings. In this case, major repairs of VAZ cars are carried out, which involves the replacement of parts of the piston group.

Whatever it was, the engine is still better not to run. And the car should be towed to the nearest service station that repairs VAZ cars.

If the level is okay, you do not need to rejoice, because more serious breakdowns are possible.

Possible faults in the lubrication system

The VAZ-2114 oil pressure switch can operate if the following faults occur:

  • The impassability of the oil filter due to its contamination;
  • Failed oil pump;
  • Clogged (contaminated) mesh oil receiver;
  • There were problems with the sensor wiring;
  • The sensor itself has failed or failed.

In the first case it will be enough just to replace the filter. As for the failure of the oil pump, besides repairing it, it will be necessary to identify and eliminate the reasons for which it failed. Contamination of the oil receiver grid indicates that there are too many harmful impurities in the oil composition. In this case, the oil must be replaced with a new one, having previously rinsed the system with a special liquid.

Check the wiring using a car tester, starting with the DDM connector, and ending with the connection to the computer.

Determine whether the sensor itself is also not difficult. You can check it yourself without recourse to specialists.

Where is the sensor

First, we determine where to find the oil pressure sensor VAZ-2114. Its location may be different, depending on the type of engine. If this is an eight-valve, then you need to look for DDM on the rear of the engine to the right (if in the cabin) on the cylinder block under the valve cover. In sixteen-valve engines, the location of the oil pressure sensor is different. It is located at the end of the camshaft bearing housing .

Check the sensor

The check of the sensor implies only its visual inspection. It is almost impossible to determine whether it is right, in domestic or "field" conditions.

So, if there is a trace of oil on its DDM housing, then the integrity of either the device itself or the threaded connection to the engine casing is broken. It often happens that DDM for some reason starts to let oil through its hull. If you start the engine, you can observe its leakage through the place where the terminal is fastened to the electrical connector. In this case, the sensor needs to be replaced.

It happens that the oil begins to ooze out from the DDM. This indicates that the connection is broken. The pressure sensor has an O-ring made of aluminum, which sometimes becomes unusable. Eliminate this problem by replacing the ring.

Self-replace sensor

In the case where everything indicates a fault with the DDM, it is better to replace it. Moreover, he is worth a penny. The replacement process is very simple, and it will not take more than 10 minutes. The algorithm of repair is as follows.

Install the car on a flat surface, lift the hood and disconnect the negative terminal from the battery. Then disconnect the connector from the sensor. Using the carabiner wrench to 21, unscrew the sensor. At this time, a leakage of a small amount of oil from the attachment point of DDM is possible. If this happens, wipe the oil with a clean rag.

After inspecting the new sensor and its O-ring, replace it and tighten it with a wrench. Connect the power cord of the DDM and the battery terminal.

How to check the oil pressure yourself

The pressure in the system is checked by a liquid manometer, equipped with a threaded connection at the end of the measuring hose. It is screwed into the same hole as the sensor. Further the engine is started, measurements are made. For VAZ-2114 vehicles, the working pressure should be 0.65 atmospheres. Deviations from this norm indicate a malfunction in the lubrication system.

Well, if such a pressure gauge is not in your arsenal, the presence of pressure is checked "by eye". To do this, the oil pressure sensor is unscrewed from the process opening, after which the crankshaft is scrolled by the starter (without starting the engine). Under normal pressure, the oil from the hole will be beaten by a fountain. This method, of course, does not guarantee the normal operation of the system, but it is able to prove that the oil pump is working.
