Problems here arise much more, and various solutions and forks, when you have to choose one thing, can not be counted at all. So it is necessary to work hard to keep the house long, and for the time of its operation it did not leak, the windows were not blown, and the foundation did not collapse under the weight of the building. But today there will be a talk about another - about one of the final stages, in fact, of construction. That is about the roof. And more precisely, how to lay a vapor barrier on the roof.

What is a vapor barrier?

Strictly speaking, the technology of production and use is simple to impossible - another additional layer of material is embedded in the roof, which does not allow moisture to pass through. A vapor barrier layer is usually a film made from several types of materials, which will be discussed a little later. So, as you see, there is nothing super complicated in this.

Why do I need a vapor barrier?

A little bit more was said a few words about the long operation of the house. So, in order for the roof to last a long time, you should think about its vapor barrier. This is not done so that moisture does not get into the house from the outside, as you might think, no, it's all about water vapor that rises up from the inside. Modern materials that are used for roofs are quite capable of keeping heat well and not letting water into the house, but they do not protect anything from getting wet from the inside. For these purposes, you need to use an additional layer of material that does not allow water vapor to the upper layers of the structure and prevents them from deteriorating. That's why you need a vapor barrier for the roof.

A place in the roof

In the construction "jargon" you can find such a thing as a roofing pie. This is due to the fact that the roof and is just something like a pie. That is, many layers of different materials are superimposed on each other - they all play different roles, and therefore, exclude none of them is not worth it. Polyethylene films as a vapor barrier material

This is the most easily accessible component of all that can be used as a vapor barrier for the roof. In addition, as has already been said, it is universal. However, for greater strength of the construction, in the absence of special qualities of rigidity and density, films with reinforced cloth or net will have to be used.

Such films produce two different types - perforated and not perforated. The first are used only for waterproofing the roof, but the latter - just for your current purpose. The fact is that perforated films are produced with holes, which makes them unsuitable for vapor barrier. At least, theoretically. In practice, the same film can be used as an insulator.

Polyethylene films are produced in rolls, and so you will lay them - for this reason it is worthwhile in advance to take care of the purchase of sealant. This is absolutely necessary to create a vapor-proof curtain, the role of which will be taken over by this film.

Polypropylene films

This kind is used mainly for waterproofing works. It is still sometimes used for vapor barrier, but only when there is nothing else at hand. Otherwise it is better to purchase a different kind.

By design, they consist of two layers. One of them is a combination of viscose and cellulose, which is used to absorb excess moisture and then dry out.

Membranes. Characteristic

This material is quite expensive, but it is understandable - it is much more modern. In fact, the membrane is closest to perfection, that is, to complete vapor insulation of the roof and protect it from external influences. However, to use them for this purpose will be quite unreasonable - waterproofing is much more suitable for them, especially for double-layered copies. These models (not only two-layer, but more so) are interesting in that they do not pass water, but steam is passed, which after being retained in the upper layer and evaporated.

Of the tools that are needed to make the installation of vapor barrier, you need only a construction stapler. If it is not at hand, do not get discouraged. It is quite possible to do with a hammer and a certain number of nails. The latter, by the way, is best to take galvanized.

Materials

In addition to the isospan, the properties of which are described above, you will need the following materials:

• Adhesive tape - for sealing seams and various joints.
• Sheathing - used as a decorative element, so that the vapor barrier layer of the material is not visible. You can make such a covering from OSB-boards, plasterboard, boards, MDF, etc.

The installation process. The scheme

The vapor barrier for the roof is laid down according to a certain scheme. As you remember from the previously submitted information, it is located at the very bottom and is attached to the rafters. For this first step, a construction stapler or nails will be used.

Izospan is produced in the form of rolls, therefore it is necessary to make an overlap in the corners, as well as on vertical and horizontal joints. This will help avoid steam leakage into the thermal insulation layer.

The last step in the installation is fixation of the resulting layer with the help of the previously mentioned adhesive tape. All joints, corners, places of abutment of the material to the walls should be carefully glued with such tape. Such a careful approach is needed to seal any possible passages.

In addition, if you sheathe vapor barrier on top of the decorative material, then you need to leave a gap of about five centimeters. This will allow ventilation.

Overlapping: Is a vapor barrier film necessary ?

In fact, vapor barrier floors - the same process as the roofing, especially if your construction is made of wood. Here humidity becomes generally a critical indicator. In addition, it is necessary in the event that downstairs there are bathrooms and bathrooms - there will always be more moisture than in the rest of the house. This also applies in part to kitchens. Also, the floors between the basement and the first floor are often equipped with a vapor barrier layer - especially if the rooms are heated. The accumulation and evaporation of condensate in this case is inevitable, which makes the installation of a vapor barrier mandatory.

Here the answer is unequivocal - to do. The second option is fraught with serious consequences. In fact, there is nothing particularly complicated in this process, and therefore it is not worth neglecting it, nor does it pay attention to small details that can later become decisive.

It should also be noted that the vapor barrier for the roof, the price of which is not so great, especially compared to other matters and materials needed during construction, is available to many. So, the films will cost you about $ 1,500, but they are the cheapest (from 660 rubles per roll). The more quality the material, the higher the price.
