Social adaptation is the process of adapting a first-grader to a new life

Social adaptation is a natural state of the individual, manifested in adaptation to new activity, to contacts, to roles. The value of the period when the child goes to school is expressed in the ability to prepare him with the least losses for unusual conditions, the class of schoolmates, the relationship with the teacher, the new rules and requirements. From this will depend on his attitude to school, to study, and even health.

Acceptance of a new role is achieved by a number of conditions. Below is their list.

  1. Development of the ability to listen and adequately respond to the actions of the teacher, analyze, plan their activities and objectively evaluate the results. This will help to quickly and effectively "join" in a complex educational process.
  2. Development of skills that help establish interpersonal relationships with teaching staff and peers.
  3. The formation of a stable educational motivation, which is expressed in the ability to properly assess the actions (one's and one's classmates), to use evaluation criteria.

Social adaptation is the most important stage in the life of a first-year student, depending on adequate self-esteem. At school, you have to compare yourself with other children, which leads to the formation of an opinion about your own abilities and capabilities, as well as about human qualities. The process of formation of self-esteem begins in early childhood, when in the family the child begins to realize whether they love him or not. Even at preschool age there is a strong sense of well-being or unhappiness in the family. In the event that at these stages there was a sense of psychological comfort, adequate self-esteem can facilitate the process of adaptation to the school.

However, even if social adaptation is successful, it is worth remembering that the schoolchild can not independently cope with some tasks. So, for example, if parents have higher requirements for training, they may have increased anxiety, fear of doing something wrong.

Social adaptation is a complex process, because at this stage the child can not fully understand the need for obtaining school knowledge. Therefore, the main task of the teacher and parents is the desire to interest him, to involve in the process. The result of the successful completion of this stage is adaptability (the emergence of a system of qualities that ensure the subsequent successful socialization of the individual).

Social adaptation of children during this period may take different time. The most intense are the first four weeks of training. This period is usually designated as acute. In most cases, it does not have the most positive impact on the psyche of the student. It is interesting that the social adaptation of convicts (at the stage of getting used to the new situation) carries a similar psychological burden. Children have a fairly mobile psyche. Therefore, noticeable shifts in the process of adaptation to new conditions appear already in the first academic half-year. This is very important for a first-year student, as the foundation is laid for the entire subsequent period of education and upbringing.

Social adaptation is a period that depends on a large number of factors, and the success of its course is individual for each child. G.M. Chutkina identified three levels that characterize the adaptation to the learning process :

  • Tall. The child positively regards the school, adequately perceives the material and easily takes possession of it, shows interest in social life, willingly carries out social assignments.
  • Average. A first-grader has a positive attitude toward learning. He understands the school material well in a detailed and clear presentation of it, solves typical problems. The orders are executed in good faith.
  • Low. A child is indifferent or negative about school, often complains of health, a depressed mood prevails. Material assimilates fragments, independent work is difficult.

It is necessary to understand that incorrect methods of upbringing, conflicts in the family, inadequately overpriced / underestimated self-esteem have a negative impact on the period of the child's entry into school life. A necessary condition is the interaction of parents with teachers.
